DUT GENDER FORUM COMMEMORATES WOMEN’S MONTH IN COLOUR AND CONNECTION

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Gender Forum transformed the DUT Hotel School into a vibrant canvas of creativity and connection on Friday, 15 August 2025, as it hosted a Women’s Month celebration unlike any other – a Brunch and Paint event dedicated to commemorating the strength, creativity, and resilience of women.

The event was more than a gathering, but it was a canvas of empowerment, a safe space where Gender Forum members came together to honour resilience, strength, and creativity of women through art and dialogue. Dr Rosaline Govender, Chairperson of the Gender Forum said, “the Gender Forum EXCO felt that it was imperative that we provide a space for our members to connect through art and dialogue as we celebrate the resilience and tenacity of women during this month.” She added, “this was in keeping with the Gender Forum’s goal to enhance the well-being of its members especially through these turbulent times”.

With easels standing tall and brushes in hand, participants embraced the opportunity to express themselves in vivid strokes, blending colours as a metaphor for the diversity and unity of women’s experiences. The soothing activity of painting was paired with meaningful conversations and a scrumptious brunch prepared by the DUT Hotel School, showcasing their new signature breakfast offering.

“This event captured the true spirit of Women’s Month,” said Ms. A. Sathyanand, who reflected on the power of art to bring balance and joy. “I just want to thank the gender forum team for a fantastic experience. I enjoyed myself with the painting experience was destressing, and I even found a new hobby.”

For others, the brunch became a reminder of inclusivity and the importance of celebrating beyond gender. “This was a wonderful initiative celebrating not just women but everyone,” said Ms. R. Khan. “The Hotel School was an excellent host with their new breakfast offering. Well done Gender Forum Exco for a beautiful event.”

Mr. S. Mazibuko described the afternoon with heartfelt enthusiasm “It was wonderful, exciting, distressing and fun to participate in such an event. I appreciate what the Gender Forum has done.”

The Brunch and Paint initiative reflects the Gender Forum’s ongoing mission to create safe, creative, and engaging platforms that encourage dialogue and support within the DUT community. Women’s Month provided the perfect backdrop to highlight not only the resilience of women but also the collective spirit of staff who continue to build a culture of inclusivity and growth at DUT.

As the morning ended with vibrant canvases, warm conversations, and a sense of renewal, it was clear that this event was more than an activity, but it was a reminder of the power of art to connect people.

As the last brushstrokes dried and plates were cleared, one thing became clear with the DUT Gender Forum had painted more than art; they had painted hope, togetherness, and the celebration of women’s enduring resilience.
