DUT GENDER FORUM PRESENTS MEN’S HEALTH AND WELLNESS BREAKFAST

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Gender Forum recently hosted a transformative Men’s Health and Wellness Breakfast at the Sastri Academic Convention Centre. This event was thoughtfully crafted to empower men within the DUT community to take control of their health and well-being, providing a supportive space for candid discussions on physical, mental, and emotional health. It marked a significant step towards addressing the often-overlooked health issues faced by men and fostering a culture of proactive wellness.

The day commenced with an invigorating Zumba session led by the DUT Sports Centre. The lively atmosphere immediately set a positive tone, as participants enthusiastically engaged in dance and exercise. Despite the intensity of some exercises, the camaraderie among attendees ensured that everyone could participate and enjoy the experience, blending fun with physical challenges.

Following the Zumba session, Dr P Ramlachan, a general medical practitioner, led an interactive session titled: “Taking Control of Your Health Journey.” This session drew great interest, as attendees engaged in an enlightening dialogue on physical and sexual health. The session was marked by a plethora of questions and a palpable curiosity, reflecting a growing awareness among men of the need for proactive health management and the importance of addressing health issues openly.

Next, Mr Zakhe Khuzwayo, Founder and President of The Men Carve, delivered a thought-provoking presentation on “Healthy Manhood.” He introduced the concepts of the “MAN BOX” and “MAN CARVE,” encouraging men to embrace both their masculine and feminine qualities. His teachings promoted a balanced and holistic approach to manhood, and the session created a safe space for participants to share personal challenges, fostering deeper conversations and a sense of solidarity among the men present.

The event concluded with a profound session on mental health led by clinical psychologist Mr Tsepiso Thusi at DUT (Midlands Campus). Titled: “Breaking the Stigma: Normalising Mental Health Conversations,” this session delved into the societal and familial expectations that often burden men, making it difficult for them to express vulnerability. The discussion was deep and sensitive, resonating strongly with attendees. Many shared personal struggles, underscoring the pressing need for continued dialogue and support in this area.

The Men’s Health and Wellness Breakfast successfully created a platform for men at DUT to connect, learn, and express themselves in an inclusive environment. The Gender Forum’s initiative not only addressed critical health issues but also began dismantling the barriers that often prevent men from seeking help and discussing their challenges openly. By fostering an environment where men feel encouraged to take care of themselves first, the event reinforced the importance of holistic health as a foundation for leading dynamic and fulfilling lives.

The breakfast was well-attended by male staff from across the university, representing diverse age groups and backgrounds. The interactive sessions, led by dynamic speakers, sparked lively exchanges of ideas, revealing a growing recognition that men’s mental and physical health has long been neglected. The candidness of the participants, particularly in their questions to Dr Ramlachan, demonstrated a collective desire to take control of their health and redefine what it means to be strong and resilient.

This Gender Forum initiative represents a pivotal moment in changing the narrative around men’s roles-not only as providers but also as holistic individuals who prioritise their health and well-being. The event encapsulated the essence of well-being, emphasising that it is not merely about one aspect of life but the harmonious interaction of physical health, relationships, financial security, and community contribution. By laying this groundwork, the Men’s Health and Wellness Breakfast marked a significant step toward a healthier, more balanced future for the men of DUT.
