DUT GRADUATE EARNS CUM LAUDE AND CONTINUES MOTHER’S LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Autumn Graduation Ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre on Saturday, 23 May 2026, was a proud and emotional occasion for Fezeka Zungu, who graduated Cum Laude and received the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award for her Advanced Diploma in Business Law.

Originally from the rural area of Kwakhoza in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, Fezeka described her academic journey as both rewarding and challenging. After first completing her Diploma in Business Law, she continued her studies and successfully obtained her Advanced Diploma, further deepening her understanding of labour law, compliance, project management, and the legal aspects of business operations.

Reflecting on her time at DUT, Fezeka said the experience helped shape her academically, professionally, and personally.

“My journey at DUT taught me the importance of discipline, resilience, and hard work. There were many sacrifices and sleepless nights along the way, but receiving Cum Laude reminded me that every challenge was worth it,” she shared.

Throughout her studies, Fezeka remained guided by the values of excellence, honesty, and responsibility, which she believes played a significant role in helping her remain focused and committed to her goals.

Like many students, she faced several obstacles during her university journey, including financial difficulties, academic pressure, and moments of self-doubt. Balancing academic responsibilities with personal commitments was not always easy, but she persevered through determination and the support of her loved ones.

“There were times when things felt overwhelming, but I kept reminding myself why I started. My family, friends, and lecturers supported me throughout the journey and that gave me strength to keep going,” she explained.

One of the most meaningful moments for Fezeka was seeing the pride and happiness reflected in her family as she celebrated her achievement. Although she is not the first graduate in her family, she proudly follows in the footsteps of her mother, who was the first graduate in the family and continues to inspire her.

Fezeka explained that her passion for law and business motivated her to pursue Business Law as a field of study.

“I have always been interested in understanding how organisations operate within a legal framework. Business Law gave me the opportunity to combine my passion for law with my interest in the corporate environment,” she explained.

Looking ahead, Fezeka hopes to further her studies and continue building a career in the legal and corporate sector, particularly in compliance, labour relations, and corporate governance. She also hopes to make a positive impact in both the workplace and her community.

To first-year students, she offered words of encouragement and motivation.

“Stay focused, work consistently, and never be afraid to ask for help when you need it. University can be difficult, but with determination, discipline, and self-belief, you can achieve your goals,” she advised.

Fezeka added that remembering where she comes from and the future she wants to create for herself and her family kept her motivated throughout her studies.

“I learned that success does not happen overnight. It comes through patience, perseverance, and hard work. I hope my journey inspires other young people from small communities to believe that their dreams are valid and achievable,” she said.
