The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Co-operative Education Unit reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening industry-academic partnerships during its Employer Awards Ceremony, held at Coastlands Hotel Musgrave on 22 May 2026.
The annual event celebrated organisations that continue to provide Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) and internship opportunities to DUT students, playing a critical role in preparing graduates for the world of work and enhancing their employability.
Bringing together representatives from industry, government and the higher education sector, the ceremony recognised employers whose continued support contributes to student development and skills advancement. Among the organisations honoured were Victoria Mxenge Hospital, Ugu District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal Treasury, Moses Kotane Institute, Lion Match, Lancet Laboratories, eThekwini Municipality, BANKSETA, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), the South African Revenue Service (SARS), and King Cetshwayo Hospital.
In welcoming guests, Acting Manager of the Co-operative Education Unit, Ms Shireen Singh, thanked industry partners, academics and stakeholders for their ongoing collaboration in creating opportunities for students. She emphasised that the awards were a token of appreciation for the invaluable role employers play in shaping future professionals and strengthening relationships between universities and industry.
“The success of our students is made possible through strong partnerships with industry. Today we celebrate not only excellence and achievement, but also mentorship, collaboration and a shared commitment to student success,” said Singh.
Prof Gugu Mchunu, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, acknowledged the vital contribution of industry partners in supporting DUT’s mission of producing competent, work-ready graduates.
Acting Director of the Co-operative Education Unit, Dr Themba Msukwini, highlighted the Unit’s role in connecting academia and industry while facilitating meaningful workplace learning experiences. He expressed appreciation to both industry partners and Co-operative Education staff for their dedication to student success and workforce development.
A memorable highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of bursaries to DUT Hospitality students Mandisa Mkhize and Anita Ntengana by Coastlands Hotel CEO and Owner, Mr Naidoo. The bursaries were awarded in recognition of the students’ academic excellence and demonstrated the impact of industry support beyond workplace learning opportunities.
Representing academia, Dr Moeti, Head of Department for Community Health Studies, thanked employers for the pivotal role they play in nurturing and developing students. He also commended the Co-operative Education Unit for its continued efforts in creating pathways to employment and professional growth.
The importance of developing students into future leaders was further emphasised by Ms Sandra Rambalee, National Health Laboratory Services Manager and Chairperson of the Advisory Board. She shared the success story of a DUT graduate who has progressed to become a Regional Manager within the organisation, illustrating the long-term value of industry partnerships.
Several employers shared testimonials highlighting the positive impact of DUT students within their organisations. Industry representatives noted that many interns placed through the Co-operative Education Unit had gone on to secure permanent employment, demonstrating the effectiveness of the University’s work-readiness initiatives.
Tasmin Khan, Human Resources Manager at Pedros, commended the partnership between the company and DUT, noting that Pedros views students as valuable contributors to the organisation. The company currently hosts more than 20 DUT interns and continues to support graduate development through workplace opportunities.
Adding a personal perspective, DUT alumna and CSI Administrator Nomfundo Gubeka reflected on the positive influence of the Co-operative Education Unit on her professional journey, while representatives from King Cetshwayo District Municipality echoed similar sentiments regarding the Unit’s role in supporting career development.
The Employer Awards Ceremony underscored DUT’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships that advance student success, strengthen graduate employability and contribute to economic and social development. Through continued collaboration with industry, the University remains dedicated to equipping students with the practical experience, skills and confidence needed to thrive in an evolving world of work.
