DUT Hosts A Colourful Parade in Celebration of Africa Month

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Student Governance and Development Department held an African Nations Parade in celebration of Africa Month. The parade featured a colourful procession of people dressed in different African traditional attire. The parade showcased a different array of ethnic colours and flags, and it commenced at ML Sultan campus and culminated at the DUT Fred Crookes Sports Centre, last week Friday, 25 May 2018.  The parade drew attention from DUT staff, students and bystanders as loud songs of celebration were heard from afar.

DUT’s Student Development Practitioner from the Student Governance and Development Department, Thokozani Sibiya, said DUT has dedicated the month of May in commemoration of Africa Day by hosting a parade, along with activations every Friday at different DUT campuses.

“The inspiration is an African inspiration because 25 May was when the African Union (AU) was formed, so the whole of May, being Africa month, we held activations every Friday at different DUT Campuses. We are co-hosting the event with Amasiko Ehlangene Movement as well as the Africa Day Foundation,” she said.

Also speaking at the event was Head of Department from theKwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Arts and Culture, Ntokozo Chonco, who spoke on the history of the AU in KwaZulu-Natal and of the city of Durban being the gateway to Africa.

“In this province, it is where we hosted the inauguration and the public conference for the formation of the African Union , hosting all the African Head of States. We have hosted many other successful conferences of note and therefore this province and this city is the gateway to Africa. The province is being developed as a centre for culture exporting excellence, attracting several cultural exporting events on a regular basis thus making it the leader in domestic tourism and a premium destination,” he said.

The event concluded with the crowds partaking in tasting the different African cuisines from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Senegal and Nigeria and enjoying entertainment provided by various performers.

DUT’s Student Governance and Development Department will host the last Africa Month celebration at the Mangosuthu University of Technology on 31 May 2018.
