The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Sport Administration Department and the School Engagement Programme team played host to schools participating in the E-Sports Competition. Expressing a few words of gratitude to the DUT team, was Dr Shabir Omar, Principal of Overport Secondary School.

“A special thank you to the DUT team and school facilitators. While these achievements are great on their own, they have a special significance during this COVID-19 pandemic. Schools have not been able to hold these kind of events. Learners have been forced into social isolation. Emotionally, this has been draining on learners. Therefore, let me applaud you for affording learners the opportunity to socialise, to interact, to compete and to experience success. You may not be aware of just how important this is to the learners. Congratulations for making a difference and for your positive contribution to education,” he said.

Echoing his appreciation was Mr Mthethwa who is a Deputy Principal at Bechet High School.

“Thank you DUT team. The smiles on the girls as we received them today from the Awards were priceless. We thank you for giving them the opportunity to be children and enjoy their school years. Your hard work and dedication gave them the opportunity to learn and have fun. God bless you all who went out of your call of duty and made things happen for them,” said Mthethwa.

Imparting words of gratitude, Director: Advanced and Alumni Relations at DUT, Mr Zwakele Ngubane said: “The School Engagement Project team is proud to have partnered with the DUT Sports Administration Department, led by Mr Bongani Yengwa to host the E-Sports tournament for the learners in the participating schools. We have recently introduced Sports as an additional pillar to our project and were it not for COVID-19, we would have hoped to host an actual tournament for soccer and netball as we believe sport is critical to overall youth and leadership development. I must extend my thanks and appreciation to the Project Manager and her team, Ms Berenice De La Croix, the DUT Sports Administration Department, Mr Alex Mdletshe- DUT Student Recruitment Manager and the entire Corporate Affairs team for the collaborative partnership in sponsoring prizes. We thank all the schools that participated and made the tournament a success.”
