DUT HOSTS SECOND UPSET WORKSHOP TITLED: CONTINUING THE LOBOLA NEGOTIATIONS

DUT HOSTS SECOND UPSET WORKSHOP TITLED: CONTINUING THE LOBOLA NEGOTIATIONS

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted the Unfurling Post School Education and Training (UPSET) Workshop titled Continuing the Lobola Negotiations held at the Edward Hotel on Tuesday, 11 October 2022.

This workshop was a continuation of the first UPSET workshop that took place at Coastlands Musgrave from 7-8 September 2022; which focused on bridging the divide between the Curricula and Qualifications of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

At the second workshop, lively engagements by various Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and DUT representatives continued in four areas namely, (i) formalising existing articulation pathways; (ii) selecting models for jointly offered Higher Certificates; (iii) establishing joint curriculum committees; and (iv) developing processes to track articulating students.

DUT’s Dr Anisa Vahed and Professor Ashley Ross who are part of the UPSET coordination supported Professor Darren Lortan who primarily guided the discussions across five working groups.  Feedback related to the focus areas above was received from Public Management, Engineering and Mathematics, Information Technology Hospitality, and Marketing Retail and Public Relations, which critically reinforces the main purpose of UPSET-to establish a coordinated implementation of the Articulation Policy within and across the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) sector.  Several of the participants expressed an interest in one more meeting of their groups this year to scale up the discussions at the workshops into effective implementation of practices and to foster a community of UPSET scholars. These discussions will be raised at the National UPSET Stakeholder workshop planned for January 2022. This workshop will draw other existing and newly established National Articulation Workshop together to jointly charter the way forward in implementing articulation across the PSET sector – Watch the Space!
