DUT Hosts Take a Girl Child to Work Day

The Durban University of Technology’s Gender Forum held the Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day initiative at the Hotel School Conference Centre, Ritson Campus, on 31 May 2018.

The event was attended by various participants, including Professor Nokuthula Sibiya, Professor Megandhren Govender, Dr Rosaline Govender, Dr Charmaine Korporaal, Ms Aritha Pillay, Mr Prinavin Govender, Mr Moses Bariki and 29 girls from the Bonela and Eastbury Secondary Schools.

Professor Sibiya said that the initiative plays an important role in the lives of young girls, and assists on educating and empowering them for their future.

“Cell C’s Take a Girl Child to Work Day has become one of the most important, life changing days for schoolgirls around the country. The much-lauded initiative has had a powerful Impact on the lives of more than a million girls around the county, preparing a core of women future leaders who will become vibrant contributors to the economy and leading job creators of our country,” she said.

Chairperson of the Gender Forum and programme director, Dr Rosaline Govender said that the Gender Forum at DUT is passionate about the initiative as it provides a platform to expose girls to programmes at DUT which are under represented by females.
Grade 9 pupil, Rebecca Budhoo, from Eastbury Secondary School said she found the initiative to be helpful and hopes to return to DUT to further her studies.

“This initiative is very good, I have gained so much experience and I had the opportunity to meet new people. I hope I can come back to DUT to further my studies,” she said.

The event included presentations by the Department of Information and Technology, the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, a tour of the Faculty of Health Sciences, a motivational talk by DUT PhD student from the Faculty of Arts and Design faculty, Mr Moses Bariki and a number of fun-filled scientific demonstrations and experiments which were conducted by Professor Govender from the DUT’s Department of Mathematics, which had the pupils in awe.

The event concluded with lunch and with students being given hampers sponsored by the Gender Forum, DUT staff members and other departments within DUT. There were many raffle draws that also took place during the course of the event and the students were excited about this.
