The Durban University of Technology (DUT) turned up the heat on Friday, 1 August 2025, as the university’s Sport Administration unit hosted a vibrant Varsity Football Activation across both the Durban and Midlands Campuses.
The event served multiple goals, to officially introduce the 2025 DUT football squad, energise student support, boost awareness for the upcoming Varsity Football tournament, meet sponsor commitments, and most importantly, strengthen a sense of DUT pride and unity.
Mr Michael Mbatha, Sports Officer at the Midlands Campus, underscored the importance of such activations in igniting campus-wide enthusiasm and lifting the team’s spirits.
“This is more than just an introduction, it is a powerful motivator for our players. Knowing the university stands behind them will drive them to perform at their best. We are here to support them all the way.” said Mbatha.
Echoing this sentiment, DUT Head Coach, Mr Ziphozonke Dlangalala emphasised the emotional boost that fan support provides to the team.
“Seeing the warm reception from fellow students will undoubtedly uplift the squad’s morale. These moments build the connection between our players and the fans, which is vital,” he noted.
Dlangalala also shared his optimism about the tournament, highlighting strong progress in training and the valuable advantage of playing home games this year. However, he reminded the team and supporters, that the players are students first.
“We are proud of the commitment shown in training. While we aim to play competitive, high-quality football, it is important to remember that our players are student-athletes. This is a privilege, and we intend to make the most of it,” he said.
He stated that they want to compete at the highest level and represent DUT with excellence, and they are ready for the challenge. He further explained that the home crowd could be a big advantage to them and they are ready for the challenge.
Team captain Xolani Mkhonza echoed the coach’s excitement and confidence, emphasising the benefit of fewer travel demands this season.
“Last year we did not have the home advantage, but this time around we will have more rest and prep time. We are ready to give it our all and aim for a place in the finals,” Mkhonza promised.
The activation day was packed with energy, featuring the official squad reveal, live music, cheerleaders, interactive games, and exciting prize giveaways, thanks to sponsors First National Bank (FNB), Suzuki, SportPesa, Cashbuild and aQuellé.
DUT will kick off their Varsity Football campaign on Thursday, 7 August 2025, facing off against Tshwane University of Technology at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.
