The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which was built on five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are further supported by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. Recently, Sinamile Sithole from the DUT Communications team engaged in a conversation with Cindé Soliman, a Junior Lecturer in the Nursing Department at Indumiso campus in Midlands, to explore the significance of the Living Values Framework and ENVISION2030.
Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?
A: “I am a Junior Lecturer in the Nursing Department at Indumiso campus. My primary role is that of a Clinical Instructor, where I guide and mentor students in practical clinical settings to ensure that they gain hands-on experience in patient care.”
Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A: “I have been part of the DUT community for just over two years.”
Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?
A: “Integrity, it serves as my moral compass in all aspects of life. Upholding integrity gives me a sense of fulfillment in my work and personal achievements. It provides me with peace of mind and reassures me that I am making ethical and meaningful contributions.”
Q: What are your views on the DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?
A: “I believe it perfectly encapsulates the DUT culture. It reflects the institution’s commitment to innovation, uniqueness, and meaningful contributions to society.”
Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “I plan to stay engaged by attending the various workshops offered at DUT. Additionally, I will integrate these values into my teaching methods, ensuring that my students not only gain academic knowledge but also develop into well-rounded individuals striving for excellence.”
Q: What is one thing that most people do not know about you?
A: “I have a deep love for astronomy. The mysteries of the universe fascinate me, and I enjoy learning about celestial bodies and space exploration.”
Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “This framework provides a strong foundation for both individuals and teams to work towards a common goal. It fosters a culture of excellence, shaping students into great leaders and professionals. Over time, it will become a defining aspect of DUT’s identity, reinforcing its reputation for producing outstanding graduates.”
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: “I enjoy reading, painting, and spending quality time with my children.”
Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?
A: “My goal is to be an approachable, trustworthy, and dynamic lecturer who inspires and motivates students. I want to create a supportive learning environment that encourages growth and development.”
Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “My four beautiful children. They are my greatest source of purpose and joy, driving me to strive for excellence every day.”
Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “I aim to complete my master’s degree by 2026 and work towards publishing academic research. If given the opportunity, I would love to pursue a doctorate as well. For me, self-actualisation is not just a goal but a fundamental need.”
Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “To travel in space. I would love to witness the dark side of the moon, see earth’s glow from space, and perhaps even discover a new star. It would be a dream come true to experience the vastness of the universe firsthand.”
