Durban University of Technology (DUT) officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, comprising five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are underpinned by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT Communications team member, Thubelihle Dumakude recently engaged in a conversation with Thalente Nkosi, lecturer in the Department of Construction Management and Quantity Surveying to delve into the living values framework and ENVISION2030.
Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?
A : “I am a lecturer in the Department of Construction Management and Quantity Surveying. I also serve as the Teaching and learning Quality Assurer Coordinator for Construction Studies, as well as the Departmental Research Committee (DRC) Secretary. In addition, I am a reviewer at the DUT Institutional Research Ethics Committee (IREC). My role involves enhancing academic quality, promoting innovative teaching approaches, strengthening research activities, and ensuring that our curriculum aligns with industry needs and sustainable development goals.”
Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A : “I have been part of the DUT family since 2023.”
Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?
A: “I associate most with the value of Excellence. I believe that excellence is not a destination but a continuous journey of growth, improvement, and integrity. It drives me to always give my best in teaching, research, and community engagement, while inspiring others to do the same.”
Q: What are your views on the DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?
A : “The DUT tagline beautifully reflects what the university stands for. Creative captures our innovative spirit; Distinctive highlights our unique approach to blending academic theory with practical relevance; and Impactful reinforces our commitment to making a meaningful difference in society through education, research, and innovation.”
Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “I plan to engage actively in DUT initiatives, workshops, and projects that promote the Living Values Framework. I will also integrate its principles into my everyday academic and professional practices, ensuring that the framework becomes a lived experience rather than a policy on paper.”
Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?
A: “Most people do not know that I am deeply passionate about research. I genuinely enjoy exploring new ideas, analysing data, and developing knowledge that addresses real-world challenges. Research fuels my curiosity and strengthens my purpose as an academic and practitioner.”
Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “The framework will strengthen DUT’s culture by aligning staff and student behaviours with shared values and principles. It will encourage collaboration, accountability, innovation, and compassion creating a positive environment that supports excellence and long-term impact.”
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: “In my spare time, I enjoy reading, mentoring young people, and engaging in community-based initiatives. I also spend time on TikTok watching videos about research, innovation, and education trends. These short, insightful clips keep me informed about emerging ideas and global research practices in a fun and accessible way.”
Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?
A: “I plan to make a positive impact by promoting a research-driven and innovation-focused culture within Construction Studies. My goal is to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to contribute meaningfully to the construction industry and society at large.”
Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “My daily motivation comes from my faith, my love for research, and my desire to empower others through education. Knowing that I can influence positive change even in small ways keeps me energised and focused.”
Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “My goal is to strengthen DUT’s research output in construction technology and safety, develop data-driven learning models, and build stronger collaborations between academia, industry, and communities. I also aspire to mentor future researchers and leaders within the built environment field.”
Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “If granted one wish, I would wish for every young person in South Africa to have equal access to quality education, resources, and mentorship empowering them to reach their full potential and transform their communities.”
