DUT IMPACT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, comprising five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are underpinned by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT Communications intern, Thabile Shinga recently engaged in a conversation with Nomfundo Gumede, a Marketing and Administration intern in the DUT Design Studio and also a Residence Advisor in the Student Housing and Residence Life unit.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?
A: “I am currently a Marketing and Administration intern in the DUT Design Studio and also a Residence Advisor in the Student Housing and Residence Life unit. My role involves supporting creative campaigns, developing content for social media, and contributing to initiatives that enhance the student experience in residence life.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A: “I have been part of the DUT family for over three years now starting in 2022, starting as an intern in Student Housing and Residence Life for two years, continued as a part of the unit as a Residence Advisor and later joined the Design Studio.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?
A: “I resonate with commitment. As someone who is passionate about student development and creative leadership, I believe that staying committed to our goals and responsibilities is key to making a lasting impact.”

Q: What are your views on the DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?
A: “I think it perfectly captures DUT’s spirit. It reflects our innovative approach to education, our unique identity as a university, and our dedication to making a meaningful difference in society.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “I plan to stay engaged through workshops, team discussions, and by actively applying the values in my daily work. I also follow DUT’s internal communications and campaigns that promote the framework.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?
A: “Most people don’t know that I recently participated in a panel discussion at the ACUHO-I Women in Housing Symposium. It was a proud moment for me as a young woman in leadership, passionate about student development.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “It will help to create a more unified and values-driven culture across the university. By aligning our actions with these principles, we can foster trust, collaboration, and excellence in everything we do.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: “I enjoy exploring creative projects, reading, and attending leadership or empowerment events. I also love curating content for social media, it’s both fun and fulfilling.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?
A: “By using creativity to tell powerful stories, to support student housing initiatives, and to contribute to campaigns that uplift and inspire students and staff alike.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “Knowing that my work can positively influence someone’s university experience keeps me motivated. I’m driven by purpose and the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “I aim to continue developing my skills in marketing and leadership, and eventually take on a more strategic role where I can lead impactful projects that support student success.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “I would wish for more opportunities for young women in leadership to be mentored, empowered, and celebrated, especially within higher education spaces.”
