DUT IMPACT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, comprising five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are underpinned by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT Communications assistant, Thabile Shinga recently engaged in a conversation with Mthokozisi Brian Mseleku, a secretary at the Marketing and Retail Department.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: “I am the departmental secretary for the Marketing and Retail Department and I am the administrative heart of the department. My role is that of support, for both students and academics. It is rare to find a young African male in this role within the university, and I am proud to raise the flag for men when it comes to administrative positions within the institution.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?

A: “I have worked for DUT for five years under various departments.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?

A: “Honesty and transparency because I believe that these best represent me and my personality traits. I also think that honesty is vital in any professional setting as it goes along with transparency. This helps me to avoid issues and allows the people I work with to be free and comfortable to work with me.”

Q: What are your views on the DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?

A: “It is very powerful as it encourages us as employees to push this narrative for better teaching and learning conditions.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?

A: “This framework is easy to absorb into your everyday life. It touches the fundamental aspects that we need as employees to work effectively and efficiently.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: “I am an introvert.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?

A: “It promotes a unified, people-centred, and ethical culture among students, staff, and the broader community. This leads to a more inclusive and supportive environment that encourages trust, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: “Since I am a Masters student, I spend my time writing my proposal. Other than that I also like watching soccer.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?

A: “By promoting young, ambitious and dynamic personalities to take the university to a new level.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?

A: “Everything happens for a reason, and God has a plan for everything.”

Q: What are your future goals at  DUT?

A: “To be involved in many projects as I am currently in the organising committee for the annual Faculty of Management Sciences sports day. I also aim to finish my academic journey.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

A: “To be the Vice-Chancellor for one year.”
