The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is guided by the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which is anchored in five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect, and accountability. These values are further strengthened by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion, and excellence.
DUT Communications team member Waheeda Peters recently engaged with Senior Lecturer, Dr Vimla Paul, from the Department of Chemistry, to gain insight into the Living Values Framework and its alignment with ENVISION2030.
Q: Kindly tell us about your role at DUT?
A: “I am a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry. My role involves teaching analytical chemistry to undergraduate and postgraduate students, mentoring students, contributing to curriculum delivery, and supporting the academic mission of the university through effective teaching and engagement with learners.”
Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A: “I have been a member of the DUT family since 1998.”
Q: Among the ENVISION2030 Living Values and principles, which one do you most associate with and why?
A: “I most closely associate with the value of student-centredness and impact. I am deeply committed to instilling a love for chemistry in a practical way that supports student understanding, growth, and success. I strongly believe that meaningful and relatable education has a lasting impact on both individuals and society.”
Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: ‘Creative, Distinctive, Impactful’?
A: “The tagline reflects DUT’s commitment to innovation, excellence, and relevance. It resonates with my own approach to teaching, where creativity in delivery, distinctiveness in academic contribution, and impactful everyday learning experiences are highly valued.”
Q: How do you plan to keep abreast of the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “I plan to stay engaged with the framework by embedding its values into my teaching practices, creating supportive and inclusive learning experiences for students, and regularly reflecting on how my teaching and mentorship contribute to student success and DUT’s long-term vision.”
Q: What is one thing that most people do not know about you?
A: “I have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.”
Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “It encourages alignment, accountability, and a unified culture, which will strengthen DUT’s ability to empower staff and students while enhancing its societal impact.”
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: “I enjoy distance running, yoga, hiking, and reading, which help me maintain balance and resilience.”
Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?
A: “By sharing my passion for chemistry with my students, delivering quality teaching, supporting student development, and remaining committed to DUT’s academic values and vision.”
Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “My love for teaching chemistry and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of my students through education.”
Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “To continue growing academically and professionally, with a clear aspiration to become an Associate Professor while contributing meaningfully to the university.”
Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “To see every girl child have the opportunity to study mathematics and science in school, with equal access to free and fair education.”
