DUT IMPACT

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is guided by the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which is anchored in five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect, and accountability. These values are further strengthened by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion, and excellence.

DUT Communications team member Thubelihle Dumakude recently engaged with Nokuzola Shinga, Acting Secretary in the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics, to gain insight into the Living Values Framework and its alignment with ENVISION2030.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: I currently serve as an Acting Secretary in the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics at DUT. My role involves providing administrative support, coordinating departmental activities, and ensuring effective communication between staff, students, and stakeholders. I strive to contribute to a well-organised and efficient working environment that supports both academic and operational excellence.

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?

A: “I have been part of the DUT family for 1 year and 5 months, and during this time I have grown both professionally and personally through the opportunities and experiences the institution has provided.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?

A: “I strongly associate with integrity, as it forms the foundation of trust and accountability in the workplace. Upholding integrity ensures that I remain honest, dependable, and consistent in all my responsibilities and interactions.”

Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?

A: “The tagline “Creative, Distinctive, Impactful” reflects a forward-thinking and dynamic institution. It highlights DUT’s commitment to innovation, uniqueness, and making a meaningful difference in society, which I believe aligns well with both staff and student aspirations.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?

A: “I plan to stay informed by actively engaging with institutional communications, attending relevant workshops or seminars, and incorporating these values into my daily work practices. Continuous learning and reflection will also help me align my actions with the framework.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: “One thing most people may not know about me is that I enjoy exploring new ideas and continuously learning, whether through reading or engaging in new experiences that broaden my perspective.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?

A: “I think the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework will help foster a unified institutional culture grounded in shared values. It will promote ethical behaviour, strengthen collaboration, and enhance overall performance, ultimately positioning DUT as a leading institution that prioritises both excellence and integrity.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: “In my spare time, I enjoy reading and engaging in activities that expand my knowledge and skills. I value opportunities that contribute to personal growth and continuous development.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?

A: “I aim to make a positive impact by maintaining a high standard of professionalism, supporting my colleagues and students, and contributing to a productive and respectful working environment. I also strive to continuously improve my skills to better serve the department.”

Q: What is your daily motivation? 

A: “My daily motivation comes from the desire to grow, add value to my work, and contribute meaningfully to the goals of the institution. Knowing that my efforts support both staff and students encourages me to do my best each day. On a personal perspective, I am forever motivated by my family and the way I have envisioned myself for the next 4 years #LivingEnvision2030.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?

A: “My future goals include furthering my studies, developing my professional skills, taking on greater responsibilities, and continuing to contribute positively to the department and the institution as a whole.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

A: “My wish would be to see continued growth and success for DUT, where both staff and students are empowered to achieve their full potential in a supportive and inspiring environment.”
