DUT IMPACT

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is guided by the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which is anchored in five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect, and accountability. These values are further strengthened by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion, and excellence.

DUT Communications team member Thubelihle Dumakude recently engaged with Dr Nomihla Ndlela, a lecturer in the Electrical Engineering department to gain insight into the Living Values Framework and its alignment with ENVISION2030.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: “I am a lecturer in the Electrical Engineering department, where I teach Instrumentation and Control 1, Power Systems 1, and Electrical Protection. My role also includes mentoring students, developing course materials, and contributing to research and academic development within the faculty. In addition, I serve as the Deputy Chair for WEBE (Women in Engineering and the Built Environment), where I support initiatives aimed at empowering and advancing women within the engineering field.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?

A: “I have been part of the DUT community since 2013, when I first joined as a diploma student. Over the years, I have grown within the institution, serving as a tutor, then a technician, and now as a lecturer. This journey has given me a deep understanding of DUT from both a student and staff perspective, and it has shaped my commitment to contributing meaningfully to the university.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?

A: “I most strongly associate with excellence, as I believe in continuously striving to improve the quality of teaching, learning, and research. Maintaining high standards not only benefits students but also contributes to the broader reputation of the institution.”

Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?

A: “The tagline reflects a forward-thinking vision for DUT. It highlights innovation in teaching and research, encourages uniqueness in approach, and emphasizes making a meaningful contribution to society.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?

A: “I plan to stay engaged through institutional workshops, internal communications, and by actively integrating these values into my daily teaching practice and interactions with students and colleagues.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?
A: “Outside of academia, I have a strong interest in continuous learning and enjoy exploring new technologies and practical applications related to engineering.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “It provides a clear and unified direction for the institution, aligning staff and students with shared values. This will strengthen institutional culture, improve student outcomes, and enhance DUT’s overall impact in society.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: “I enjoy reading, engaging with new developments in engineering, and spending time with family and friends.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?

A: “I aim to contribute by delivering quality education, supporting student development, and participating in initiatives that enhance teaching, learning, and research within the department.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?

A: “My daily motivation comes from the opportunity to make a difference in students’ lives by helping them gain knowledge, skills, and confidence for their future careers. When I teach a module, I always remind myself that, within DUT, I am responsible for that module, and it is my duty to deliver it in a way that truly makes an impact. This mindset pushes me to continuously improve and give my best to my students.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?

A: “My goals include advancing my research, enhancing my teaching methodologies, and contributing more actively to academic development and innovation within the university.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

A: “I would wish for continued growth and success for both my students and the institution, ensuring that we collectively make a lasting and positive impact.”
