DUT IMPACT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) has officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which is anchored in five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are further supported by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence.

DUT Communications team member Thubelihle Dumakude recently engaged in a conversation with Ms Oyama Mkwalo, an intern in the Community Engagement Office at DUT, to explore the Living Values Framework and ENVISION2030.

Q: Kindly tell us about your role at DUT?

A: “My name is Oyama Ongezile Mkwalo. I am currently an intern in the Community Engagement Unit and also serve as a Residence Advisor, where I lead and support 599 students. I am also in my second year of my MBA.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?

A: “I have been part of the DUT family for six years. I joined DUT as a student and never imagined that I would one day become a staff member. I have faced ups and downs during my time here. It is a place I will never forget, and I am grateful for all the opportunities I have received. It has been a meaningful journey of growth.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?

A: “I identify most with integrity because I believe in being honest, responsible and dependable in all that I do. Integrity helps build trust and strong professional relationships.”

Q: What are your views on the DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?

A: “I believe the DUT tagline is inspiring and reflects the institution’s vision in a powerful way. It encourages creativity, individuality and meaningful contribution.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast of the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?

A: “I plan to stay informed by engaging with DUT Communications, participating in institutional activities and applying the values in my daily work and interactions.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: “Most people do not know that I deeply love God and strive to live a life guided by faith. This is an important part of who I am. In isiXhosa, I would say, ‘Ngisazomu sebenzela mina uThixo.’ I am where I am today because of God and my ancestors.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?

A: “The framework will help DUT build a more united, ethical and values-driven environment. It will also strengthen service delivery and enhance the University’s overall impact.”

A: “In my spare time, I enjoy watching TikTok videos because they help me relax and unwind.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?

A: “I plan to make a positive impact by being supportive, responsible and committed in my role. I want to contribute positively to student development and the DUT community.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?

A: “My daily motivation is to become a better version of myself while making a positive difference in the lives of others.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?

A: “My future goals at DUT are to continue growing professionally, take on greater responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to the institution’s success.”
