DUT IMPACT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) has officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which is anchored in five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are further supported by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence.

DUT Communications team member Thubelihle Dumakude recently engaged in a conversation with Mr Swelihle Shoba, Administrative Assistant in the Advancement & Alumni Relations Unit at DUT, to explore the Living Values Framework and ENVISION2030.

Q: Kindly tell us about your role at DUT?

A: “I joined the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Advancement & Alumni Relations Unit as an intern in May 2024 and later progressed into the role of Administrative Assistant. My responsibilities include assisting with the production of the DUT Connect Alumni Magazine, coordinating the Alumnus of the Month initiative, which recognises alumni making significant contributions in their respective fields, and supporting the planning and execution of fundraising events such as the Barnyard Theatre Fundraiser held at Suncoast Barnyard Theatre. Through these responsibilities, I have gained valuable experience in alumni engagement, communications, event coordination and fundraising.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?

A: “I have been part of the DUT family for two years, and it has been a rewarding journey of personal and professional growth.”

Q: Among the ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you identify with most and why?

A: “I associate most strongly with integrity because I believe in doing the right thing, whether in my professional responsibilities or personal life. Integrity builds trust, strengthens relationships and ensures that I remain accountable in everything I do.”

Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?

A: “I believe the tagline, ‘Creative, Distinctive, Impactful,’ perfectly reflects what DUT stands for. As a university of technology, DUT encourages creativity through innovation, distinguishes itself by producing industry-ready graduates and meaningful research, and creates a lasting impact by transforming lives and contributing to the social and economic development of our communities. The tagline captures the university’s commitment to excellence and its vision to make a positive difference locally and globally.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast of the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?

A: “I plan to keep the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework at the centre of my work by embodying its principles in my daily behaviour, decision-making and interactions with colleagues, students, alumni and stakeholders. Living these values consistently is the best way to contribute to a positive institutional culture.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: “One thing that most people do not know about me is that when I was in high school, I had no idea what career I wanted to pursue. My journey has taught me that it is okay not to have all the answers immediately, as growth often comes through experience and opportunity.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?

A: “I believe the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework has the potential to strengthen DUT by fostering a culture built on shared values, accountability, respect and excellence. It provides a common foundation for staff and students to work towards the university’s strategic goals while strengthening stakeholder relationships, enhancing collaboration and supporting the long-term sustainability of the institution.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: “In my spare time, I enjoy running. It helps me stay physically fit, maintain discipline and clear my mind. Running has also taught me resilience, consistency and the importance of setting and achieving goals.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?

A: “I plan to make a positive impact at DUT by living the values of the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework in everything I do. I strive to contribute to a culture of excellence, integrity, accountability and respect while supporting initiatives that enhance student success, strengthen alumni engagement and advance the university’s mission of innovation and societal impact.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?

A: “My daily motivation is to be a man of integrity and strong principles while working hard to provide for and support my family. Knowing that my efforts can positively influence both my loved ones and those around me inspires me to give my best every day.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?

A: “My goal is to become deeply woven into the fabric of DUT by contributing meaningfully to the university’s third-stream income initiatives and strengthening relationships with our alumni. I want to encourage alumni to remain connected to the university by giving back through their time, expertise, mentorship or financial contributions. Ultimately, I hope to play a role in establishing the Advancement & Alumni Relations Unit as one of the leading university advancement offices in South Africa.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

A: “My one wish would be for everyone around me, including my family, colleagues, students and community, to have the opportunity to thrive, grow and achieve their goals. I find great purpose in helping others succeed because I believe that when people are empowered, they create lasting positive change that benefits society.”
