Durban University of Technology (DUT) has officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which is anchored in five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are further supported by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence.
DUT Communications team member Waheeda Peters recently engaged in a conversation with Basanda Sithole, a Marketing Intern within the Technology Transfer and Innovation (TTI) Unit at DUT, to explore the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework.
Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?
“I wear four different hats within DUT. I am a graduate with a Diploma in Management Sciences: Marketing, which I completed cum laude. I am currently pursuing my Advanced Diploma in Marketing, serve as a House Committee member under Student Housing and Residence Life, and work as a Marketing Intern in DUT’s Technology Transfer and Innovation (TTI) Unit.”
How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
“I have been part of the DUT family since 2023 and am currently in my fourth year. During this time, I have had the opportunity to grow as a student, leader and employee, gaining valuable experiences that have shaped both my personal and professional development.”
Among the ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which ones do you identify with most and why?
“I identify most strongly with the values of fairness, professionalism, respect and accountability. These are principles I strive to uphold every day in my studies, work and personal life. I believe in treating everyone with fairness and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances. I also take pride in conducting myself professionally, honouring my commitments and taking responsibility for my actions, whether at DUT, on the football field or in everyday life.”
What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?
“I believe the tagline, ‘Creative, Distinctive, Impactful,’ perfectly reflects the direction DUT is taking. It encourages innovation, inspires individuals to think differently and reminds us that our work should create meaningful and lasting change. As someone working within the Technology Transfer and Innovation Unit, I see these qualities demonstrated through the university’s efforts to transform ideas into solutions that positively impact society.”
How are you planning to keep abreast of the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
“I plan to keep the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework at the forefront by continuously learning about it, actively participating in university initiatives and ensuring that my daily actions reflect these values. I also believe leading by example is one of the best ways to promote the framework, so I aim to embody these principles in both my academic and professional life.”
What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?
“One thing that most people do not know about me is that I am a very sensitive person who cares deeply about the people in my life. Because of that, I am very selective about who I allow into my circle, as I value genuine relationships built on trust, respect and loyalty.”
In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
“I believe the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework will help create a stronger culture of respect, accountability, collaboration and excellence across the university. When students and staff embrace these values, they contribute to a more positive learning and working environment while strengthening DUT’s reputation as an institution that develops graduates who are not only academically capable but also ethical and socially responsible.”
What do you like to do in your spare time?
“In my spare time, I enjoy learning about ways to improve my overall health, knowledge and fitness. Whether it is improving my nutrition, eating healthier, building strength and mobility, or developing my knowledge and mindset, I am always looking for ways to become a better version of myself mentally, physically and emotionally.”
How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?
“I plan to make a positive impact at DUT by actively participating in initiatives that give back to society, improve student and staff experiences, and promote the university’s Living Values. I would also like to contribute to the growth of sport at DUT, particularly football. I believe the university has the potential to further develop its sporting infrastructure by investing in dedicated facilities for different sporting codes, creating more opportunities for students to participate, develop their talents and enjoy a well rounded university experience.”
What is your daily motivation?
“My daily motivation is to become the best version of myself. I believe that the more I grow mentally, physically, academically, professionally and financially, the better equipped I will be to create opportunities for myself and provide a better future for the people I care about.”
What are your future goals at DUT?
“My future goals at DUT are to complete my Advanced Diploma with excellence, continue contributing to initiatives that improve student life and the university community, and further develop myself both personally and professionally. I also hope to leave a positive legacy by making meaningful contributions that continue to benefit DUT long after my time as a student.”
If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
“My one wish would be to live a life with purpose and freedom, waking up every day to do work that I genuinely enjoy while continuously improving my mental, physical and financial well-being. I would also wish to be surrounded by a community that values personal growth, meaningful relationships and making a positive impact on the lives of others.”
