Durban University of Technology (DUT) has officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, anchored in five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These are supported by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence.
DUT Communications team member Luyanda Mlaba recently spoke to Lindelwa Sibongiseni Sibiya, an intern in the Corporate Affairs’ Marketing, PR and Events unit, about the Living Values Framework and how it relates to his role at DUT.
Q: Tell us about your role at DUT.
A: “I coordinate events and distribute institutional branding materials for the university’s central functions. Additionally, I am a final-year Business and Information Management diploma student.”
Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A: “I am a member of the DUT family for three years.”
Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?
A: “Commitment stands out above the rest for me. Given the university’s diverse functions, the entire DUT community needs to be committed to work that moves the institution forward. Teaching and learning, stakeholder engagement, and efforts to enhance the university’s image should not simply be tick-box exercises. They should reflect a genuine commitment to making a difference.”
Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?
A: “Creativity is reflected in our clubs and societies, ResLife networks, and other platforms that make university life about more than obtaining a qualification. These spaces allow students to explore their talents and develop skills. Management and staff also work hard to find creative ways to improve service delivery. Distinctiveness comes from the ways we apply our creativity to stand out. When creativity and distinctiveness work together, they can help us make a meaningful impact on one another and the future of DUT.”
Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “I plan to continue learning about the framework and applying the living values in my daily work. I will also participate in relevant DUT training and initiatives and reflect on how my conduct and performance align with the living values.”
Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “The framework can help DUT build a positive, respectful and accountable university community. Values such as respect, integrity, compassion, fairness and professionalism can strengthen relationships between students and staff, promote ethical behaviour and encourage everyone to take responsibility for their actions. Ultimately, these values can improve the student experience and help DUT achieve its long-term goals.”
Q: What motivates you, and how do you hope to make a positive impact at DUT?
A: “I plan to make a positive impact by participating in university activities, supporting fellow students and promoting respect, integrity, accountability and professionalism. I also hope to contribute ideas that improve the student experience and help create a more inclusive and supportive campus environment.”
Q: What is one thing people may not know about you?
A: “I do not believe in working in silos. I believe collaboration and decentralisation are effective ways to achieve positive results. I firmly believe that if you go alone, you go fast, but if you go together, you go far.”
Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “My daily motivation is seeing people change the way they view things, the way they behave and the way they perceive the future all because of my presence and moral support. I therefore contend that no matter how quiet you are, if you are committed to your work, it shall speak for you.”
Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “My goals are to excel academically, develop my leadership and communication skills, and become more involved in initiatives that benefit students and the university. I also want to grow personally and professionally, build meaningful relationships and use the opportunities at DUT to prepare for a successful career while making a positive contribution to the university community.”
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
A: “I enjoy attending events where I can learn new things and develop myself holistically.”
Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “I wish for every DUT student to have equal access to the opportunities, resources, and support needed to succeed. This will help students reach their full potential, overcome challenges, and build a stronger, more inclusive DUT community.”
