DUT impact

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently approved the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. The five values are identified as transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. The principles espoused are fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT’s Communications team, Lethukuthula Ngubane spoke to Mr Thabiso Msomi, Lecturer :Management Accounting department.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT? 

A: “I am a lecturer at DUT, my role encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities that include teaching, research, and community engagement. My primary responsibility is to provide high-quality teaching and learning experiences to students, which involves developing course content, delivering lectures and tutorials, grading assignments and assessments, and providing feedback to students. In addition to teaching, I am also expected to engage in original research activities, publish research articles in reputable academic journals, and apply for research grants. I am expected to collaborate with local organizations and industry partners to contribute to economic and social development in the community”. 

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family? 

A: “I joined DUT as a lecturer three years ago, and since then, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse and talented group of students and colleagues. As a member of the DUT family, I have been able to contribute to the university’s mission of providing high-quality education and research that makes a positive impact in our society. I am grateful for the opportunities and support that DUT has provided me, and I look forward to continuing to grow and learn as a part of this dynamic and innovative community”. 

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework? 

A: “In order to stay up-to-date with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, I am committed to ongoing reflection and study of the document. I make a conscious effort to review it regularly, and to engage in deep reflection on its contents. I believe it is also important to have strategic conversations with colleagues and leaders in the organization, in order to gain additional insights and perspectives. As someone who is passionate about living the values espoused by ENVISION2030, I understand that it is essential to practice what we preach if we are to achieve its aspirations. I am heartened by the progress that has been made thus far and remain committed to doing my part to ensure that we continue moving forward in our efforts to build a more sustainable and just world”. 

Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative. Distinctive. Impactful. 

A: “The new DUT tagline “Creative. Distinctive. Impactful.” aligns with the university’s vision of producing entrepreneurial, innovative, and adaptive graduates who can participate productively in the development of the region, country, and the world. The tagline also emphasizes the importance of making a meaningful impact on society, which is one of the key strategic objectives of ENVISION2030’s Society perspective. As a lecturer, incorporating these values in teaching and learning can inspire and motivate students to develop a strong sense of stewardship, create distinctive and innovative solutions, and strive to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond”. 

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you? 

A: “My ultimate goal is to empower my students with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their academic pursuits and beyond. To achieve this, I strive to provide valuable insights, engaging resources, and a supportive learning environment that encourages curiosity and critical thinking. I recognize the importance of staying up-to-date with the latest advancements and best practices in my field, and I am committed to continuous learning and professional development to ensure that I provide the most accurate and relevant information to my students. Ultimately, my passion for teaching and dedication to my students’ success drives my work as a lecturer, and I am honoured to play a role in shaping the future leaders of our society”. 

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT? 

A: “The ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework will benefit DUT in several ways. Firstly, it provides a clear vision and strategic direction for the university, which will help guide decision-making and resource allocation towards achieving specific goals and objectives. This will ensure that the university remains relevant and responsive to the needs of its stakeholders, including students, staff, industry partners, and the broader community. 

Secondly, the framework emphasizes the importance of values and principles-based leadership, which promotes ethical and responsible behaviour among all members of the university community. This will help to build a culture of trust and accountability, which will foster collaboration and innovation, and create a positive and inclusive learning environment for students.” 

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? 

A: As someone who is deeply committed to addressing the issues that keep African countries poor through research, I spend a lot of my spare time conducting research and publishing papers on topics that are important to the continent. Currently, I am also registered for a PhD programme that will allow me to further explore these issues and contribute to finding solutions. Apart from my research work, I am also a spiritual person and enjoy reading the Bible in my free time. Giving back to the community is important to me, so I also enjoy volunteering and doing charity work whenever I can”. 

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT? 

A: “As a Lecturer at DUT, I strive to create an engaging learning environment that fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills and encourages personal and professional growth for my students. Collaborating with other faculty members, I plan to design and implement innovative teaching strategies, such as integrating technology and real-world case studies, to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. To contribute to DUT’s academic excellence, I am committed to actively participating in research activities and publishing my findings in reputable academic journals. Additionally, I aim to engage with the wider DUT community through mentorship and outreach programmes and contribute to the institution’s strategic vision and goals.” 

Q: What is your daily motivation? 

A: “As someone who is constantly seeking personal and professional growth, my daily motivation stems from a variety of sources. I find great fulfilment in meeting deadlines, targets, and goals, whether they be personal or work-related. Mentoring and coaching others also brings me joy, as I am passionate about helping others succeed. Additionally, I am driven by the pursuit of knowledge and enjoy learning new things, whether it be to improve my understanding of a particular subject or to gain new skills that can be applied in my work”. 

Q: What are your future goals at DUT? 

A: “As a Lecturer at DUT, my future goals include continuously improving my teaching methodologies and exploring innovative strategies to enhance the learning outcomes of my students. I also plan to publish research papers in reputable academic journals and engage in research collaborations with other faculty members and industry partners. In terms of professional growth within the institution, my goal is to advance to a senior teaching position and take on leadership roles in designing and implementing academic programs that align with DUT’s strategic vision. I also aspire to mentor and supervise postgraduate students and contribute to the development of young scholars in my field.”.  

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be? 

A: “I would wish for an end to global poverty, hunger, and inequality. I believe that with equal access to basic needs such as food, clean water, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, every individual would have a fair chance at a happy and fulfilling life. This would promote global peace and stability, as well as improve the well-being of the planet as a whole”.
