The Durban University of Technology (DUT) approved the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. The five values are identified as transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. The principles espoused are fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT’s Communications team, Waheeda Peters spoke to Professor Ferina Marimuthu who is the Head of Department of Financial Accounting, which is under the helm of the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics.
Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?
A: “I am currently an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Financial Accounting.”
Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A: “ I’ve been a part of DUT for the past 25 years, having joined the university before the merger in 1998. Throughout this time, I’ve witnessed the remarkable evolution of DUT, culminating in its current position as the leading UoT in South Africa.”
Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?
A: “For me, it is integrity as it aligns with my personal and professional beliefs. Upholding integrity in all aspects of life and work is crucial for building trust, maintaining ethical standards, and ensuring accountability. It is the cornerstone of my character and guides my decision-making processes.”
Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative. Distinctive. Impactful?
A: “It reflects the university’s commitment to innovation, uniqueness, and making a meaningful difference. ‘Creativity’ and ‘Distinctive’ are essential in higher education to foster a dynamic learning environment and produce graduates who can make a positive impact in society. ‘Impactful’ underscores the importance of creating a lasting and meaningful influence.”
Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “Staying attuned to the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework involves active engagement. I will attend workshops and engage in professional development opportunities that relate to the Living Values Framework, collaborate with key stakeholders to integrate the framework into the department’s practices and encourage open discussions to ensure that the framework is aligned with the department’s objectives.”
Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?
A: “Behind the scenes, I am tenacious and resolute. I don’t throw in the towel when faced with challenges; instead, I persevere until a solution is found. Quitting is not in my vocabulary; resilience is my silent strength, which comes from the support of my family and friends.”
Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “The Living Values Framework will enhance the university’s reputation and attract prospective staff and students who align with its values and principles. The Framework can be seen as a blueprint for fostering a culture of inclusivity, ethical conduct, and global citizenship, hence supporting the transformation agenda.”
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: “I enjoy spending quality time with family, embarking on scenic walks, and indulging in catching up on my favourite Netflix series.”
Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?
A; “I believe I’ve been contributing positively within my department and faculty by fostering a supportive and collaborative environment that values innovation and excellence, leading to a ripple effect of positive change. Continuous mentorship, support for staff and students, promotion of research collaborations, and advocacy for diversity and inclusion are integral components of my ongoing strategy.”
Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “Every day unfolds a new chapter, and my motivation comes from the potential to make a positive difference in the lives of others, be it the journey of our students, the success of my colleagues, or actively participating in DUT’s ENVISION2030.”
Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “My future goals at DUT are twofold: from a personal capacity, to be an NRF-rated researcher and attain full professorship. Simultaneously, as a leader, I will steer the department towards transcending boundaries. This involves advancing the academic programmes, fostering research collaborations, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and innovation, and supporting the professional development of my staff.”
Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “It would be for every individual to have the opportunity to succeed and make a positive impact in the world, ultimately contributing to the reduction of poverty. This wish encapsulates the belief that everyone deserves the chance to thrive and make a meaningful difference no matter where you come from.”
