The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has officially become a signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum 2020 (MCU 2020), joining a global network of more than 1000 universities from over 90 countries, that have affirmed their commitment to academic freedom, institutional autonomy, integrity and the public responsibility of higher education.
The historic signing ceremony took place at King’s College London, one of the world’s leading universities and host of this year’s international MCU gathering. The event brought together higher education leaders from across the globe to reaffirm shared values that underpin the modern university.
Professor Fulufhelo Nemavhola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement at DUT, signed the Magna Charta Universitatum 2020 on behalf of the University.
The signing marked an important milestone in DUT’s journey as a values-driven, engaged and globally connected institution. DUT has proudly aligned itself with an international community committed to academic excellence, responsible research, ethical leadership and the pursuit of knowledge for the public good. These principles echo the foundations of the DUT ENVISION2030 strategy. By becoming an MCU 2020 signatory, DUT strengthens its international standing, enhances opportunities for global collaboration and reinforces its dedication to responsible, impactful higher education.
First drafted at the University of Bologna, Italy in 1988 and revised in 2020 to respond to emerging global challenges, the Magna Charta Universitatum is a declaration that sets out the fundamental principles that guide universities worldwide. The updated MCU 2020 emphasises academic freedom, institutional autonomy, sustainability, digital transformation, equity and integrity, values that resonate strongly with DUT’s strategic direction.
