The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is stepping up to the plate with an exciting new initiative towards creating “Green Ecosystems” with the launch of its Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) Project. Spearheaded by the Real Estate Management (REM) through an appointed RVM Project Team, this ground-breaking effort aims to ignite and sustain a green mindset and encourage the DUT community to practice recycling, as part of a Green Campus Initiative. The anticipated launch will take place at the Allan Pittendrigh Library, Steve Biko campus in Durban and at Indumiso campus Library in Pietermaritzburg on Friday, 04 October 2024.
The six state-of-the-art Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) are located at strategic locations within DUT campuses: the Library Complex at Steve Biko Campus, Block C1 at Ritson Campus, Courtyard 2 of Block B at ML Sultan Campus, the Student Canteen in Block A at City Campus, the Basement in Block L at Midlands Riverside Campus, and the Library complex at Indumiso Campus.
This project is aligned to the DUT ENVISION2030 strategy which commits to integrating practical sustainability solutions into campus life and improving the university’s overall environmental impact.
Recycling has never been this exciting, easy or more rewarding! Simply drop off your plastic and glass bottles, aluminium cans and Tetra Pak packaging at the Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) and start reaping the benefits. Each time you recycle, you’ll earn digital credits through the Imagined Earth app. These credits can be used to purchase airtime, invest in Easy Equities or add points to your Shell V+ account, along with other rewards and coupons. Mr Thabani Mhlongo, Senior Director of Real Estate Management at DUT highlighted the importance of this initiative not only at DUT but throughout the higher education sector as the key pillar of sustainability implementation towards green campuses.
“The RVM have become the smart and fun interventions in recycling processes. The increased participation will contribute towards waste reduction initiatives that DUT strives to achieve. Together, let’s flip the script on waste management and nurture a greener tomorrow! Let’s make every waste count,” said Mr Mhlongo
He further expressed optimism about the future, noting that the Real Estate Management unit is poised to explore more green campus initiatives, especially with the growing focus on sustainability.
The Real Estate Management unit is calling on the DUT community to attend the official launch and become a part of this transformative movement. They believe this will give the staff and students a chance to contribute to a sustainable campus, where they will inspire their peers, and help to cultivate a culture of environmental consciousness.
