DUT LECTURER SETS SIGHTS ON HIS FIRST COMRADES MARATHON

For many runners, the Comrades Marathon represents the ultimate test of endurance, determination and resilience. For Mr Lubabalo Mbangata, a Lecturer and Researcher in the Department of Information Systems at Durban University of Technology (DUT), participating in the 2026 Comrades Marathon is the fulfilment of a long-held dream.

Balancing the demands of academia with the rigours of marathon training has required careful planning and discipline. Despite a busy schedule of lectures, student consultations, research activities and administrative responsibilities, Lubabalo has remained committed to preparing for what will be his first Comrades Marathon.

“Preparing for the race has required careful planning, discipline and consistency to balance my professional responsibilities and training commitments,” he said.

His passion for long-distance running stems from the personal growth and fulfilment it offers. While running is physically demanding, Lubabalo believes it is equally a mental and emotional journey.

“Long-distance running teaches patience, discipline and perseverance. There are moments of excitement and achievement, but also periods of fatigue and self-doubt that test your resilience. The sense of accomplishment that comes from overcoming these challenges is incredibly rewarding,” he explained.

Training for the Comrades Marathon requires dedication and consistency. His weekly programme includes recovery runs, tempo sessions, hill training, speed work and long-distance weekend runs, all aimed at building the endurance required for one of the world’s most iconic ultramarathons.

As a first-time Comrades participant, Lubabalo’s primary goal is to complete the race and embrace the experience. However, he also has ambitious aspirations.

“Achieving a silver medal finish would be an exceptional accomplishment and something I would be extremely proud of. Regardless of the result, I want to cross the finish line knowing that I gave my best effort and represented myself, my family and DUT with pride,” he said.

Reflecting on the advice he would offer fellow runners, Lubabalo emphasised the importance of trusting the process.

“Trust the work you have put in during training and the race plan you have developed with your coach. Respect the distance, pace yourself wisely, stay hydrated and listen to your body. Most importantly, enjoy the experience because participating in and finishing the Comrades Marathon is an achievement in itself,” he advised.

Supported by his family, friends, colleagues, fellow runners and coach Mr Thuso Mosia, Lubabalo is ready to take on one of the greatest challenges of his life. As he prepares to stand on the Comrades starting line for the first time, he hopes his journey will inspire others to pursue their goals with determination, discipline and perseverance.
