A Residence Life Officer, Ntsikelelo Nhlenyama, within the Student Housing and Residence Life unit across Durban University of Technology’s Midlands Campuses, graduated from the DUT Business School after completing an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration during the 2026 Autumn Graduation. The ceremony took place at the Olive Convention Centre (OCC) in Durban on Monday, 25 May 2026.
Sharing his journey at DUT, he said that his journey had been nothing short of transformation. He explained that it had begun with a simple desire to serve, first as a Class Representative and later as a Faculty Representative, where he discovered the power of student leadership and the responsibility that came with being a voice for others.
He further shared that one of the most unforgettable moments of his DUT journey had been travelling to China for the Winter Camp through the Confucius Institute, an experience that had opened his eyes to the world beyond his immediate environment and had taught him valuable lessons about culture, diversity, confidence, and growth.
He further expressed that DUT became more than just an institution for him, as it was a place where his leadership was tested and strengthened. He added that through roles such as House Committee Project Officer, Chairperson, and Central Housing Council President, he worked closely with students, addressed real challenges, and contributed to building a stronger residence community.
“As a Residence Life Officer (RLO) at DUT, my role is centred around creating an inclusive and supportive environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally. I oversee residence life programmes and student development initiatives that contribute towards student wellbeing, leadership development, and social cohesion within the Living and Learning spaces,” he explained.
He shared that balancing work, and studies had given him a deeper appreciation for discipline and consistency. He further noted that growth does not always happen loudly; sometimes it happens quietly through routine, sacrifice, and showing up every day.
Sharing the DUT living values he associated most with, he said that they were integrity, compassion, and respect. He explained that working within student spaces taught one that people may forget what was said, but they rarely forget how they were made to feel. He further stated that integrity meant remaining honest and principled even in moments when no one was watching.
He added that compassion and respect were equally important because every student arrived carrying different realities, pressures, and expectations. He emphasised that sometimes the most meaningful thing one could offer another person was dignity, understanding, and the feeling of being seen.
“My family, friends, colleagues, and mentors have all contributed meaningfully throughout my journey. I am especially grateful to people such as Dr Andile Masuku, Ms Kholeka Mfeka, Ms Zinhle Madela, and Khulasande Tshayile, whose support, encouragement, and belief in me kept me grounded during demanding periods,” he added.
His life has always been centred around academics and continuous learning, which has naturally motivated him to continue pursuing further studies. He is currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration, with the goal of continuing to study for a master’s degree next year.
Sharing his long-term aspirations, he said he aims to continue growing within higher education and youth development spaces while contributing meaningfully to leadership development and student support initiatives. He added that he remains committed to continuous learning and hopes to have a lasting impact on student success and empowerment.
Nhlenyama advised students to take their academic journey seriously while also allowing themselves to learn beyond the classroom. He stated that some of the most valuable lessons come through people, experiences, and responsibility.
