DUT PARTNERS WITH NUST TO ENHANCE MARITIME EDUCATION AND RESEARCH

In a strategic move to enhance maritime education and research in Southern Africa, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Department of Maritime Studies and the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Electrical Engineering have joined forces to develop industry-aligned training programs and research initiatives.

The partnership was formalised during a high-level meeting on Friday, 28 March 2025, where representatives from both institutions outlined a roadmap for collaboration. With the maritime sector playing a crucial role in regional trade, logistics, and economic development, this initiative aims to bridge knowledge gaps, foster innovation, and ensure that graduates are equipped with the skills required by the industry.

The collaboration focuses on enhancing maritime education through curriculum development, knowledge exchange, and capacity-building initiatives. Both institutions aim to explore opportunities for academic cooperation, including student and staff mobility, joint training programs, and research projects aligned with industry needs. Additionally, the partnership seeks to strengthen engagement with key stakeholders in the maritime sector to support professional development and innovation.

Speaking on the initiative, Dr Michael Manqele, Head of the Department of Maritime Studies at DUT, expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential.

“We had a successful meeting with our counterparts at NUST, where we explored ways to collaborate in maritime education and research. This partnership will be instrumental in advancing skills development, academic excellence, and industry engagement in the maritime sector. By working together, we can create meaningful opportunities for students and professionals in both countries.”

Adding to this, Professor Singh, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at DUT, emphasised the significance of the partnership in shaping the future of maritime studies.

“This collaboration aligns with DUT’s strategic vision of fostering international partnerships that enhance academic and research excellence. By combining our strengths with NUST, we can develop high-quality maritime programs that address industry needs, drive innovation, and expand opportunities for students and staff. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this initiative on the maritime sector in both Namibia and South Africa.”

With the global maritime sector continuously evolving, DUT and NUST’s collaboration is expected to play a vital role in producing highly skilled maritime professionals, driving research excellence, and strengthening industry partnerships.

As the two institutions set sail on this new journey, stakeholders can expect continued updates on the progress of this landmark initiative, which is set to shape the future of maritime studies in the region.
