DUT PLAYED HOST TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN COMMERCE DEANS ASSOCIATION MEETING

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Faculty of Accounting and Informatics and the Faculty of Management Sciences recently came together to host the prestigious South African Commerce Deans Association (SACDA) Meeting. The event took place at the Capital Zimbali in Durban, South Africa. This gathering brought together representatives from 23 out of the 26 universities in South Africa to discuss matters pertaining to the management and execution of teaching, learning, research, and community engagement in the field of commerce.

The two-day event commenced with a grand gala dinner where esteemed guests were welcomed by the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences at DUT, Professor Fulufhelo Netswera. The elegant setting and ambiance provided the ideal backdrop for networking and fostering meaningful connections amongst the delegates.

On day one, the official meeting kicked off with the proceedings facilitated by the Chairperson and Secretary of the South African Commerce Deans Association (SACDA), Dr Edgar Nesamvuni and Esme Labuschagne (Secretary). The primary objective of the gathering was to address and deliberate upon matters pertaining to the management and implementation of commerce education, including teaching methodologies, learning outcomes, research endeavours, and community engagement initiatives.

The meeting provided an invaluable opportunity for representatives from various universities to share their insights, experiences, and best practices in the realm of commerce education. With 23 universities being present, the diversity of perspectives and approaches enriched the discussions, fostering a spirit of collaboration and mutual learning. The attendees engaged in thought-provoking conversations, sharing innovative strategies and successful initiatives that have had a positive impact on their respective institutions.

One of the highlights of the meeting was an interview with the SACDA Chairperson, Dr Edgar Nesamvuni who shed light on their vision and plans for the next five years. When asked about the future direction of commerce education in South Africa, he emphasised the importance of embracing emerging technologies, fostering industry-academia partnerships, and enhancing the relevance of commerce education to meet the evolving needs of the job market. He further highlighted the need for continuous professional development among faculty members, along with the integration of practical, real-world experiences into the curriculum.

“The Association wants to contribute to the South African economy through teaching and learning and research of relevant and up-to-date programmes that each individual institution can deliver and research that we conduct should have a contribution to the economy. We are going to be communicating with the department of small business development as we plan to contribute to their research agenda, since it was launched,” said Dr Nesamvuni.

The meeting concluded with a sense of accomplishment and renewed dedication to advancing commerce education in South Africa. Delegates left with a wealth of ideas, inspiration, and a strengthened network of peers across the different universities. The event served as a catalyst for future collaborations, with universities pledging to work together in pursuit of excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement.

The Executive Dean: Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, Prof Oludayo Olugbara indicated that hosting the South African Commerce Deans Association meeting was a significant milestone for DUT, further establishing its reputation as a leading institution in the field of commerce education. The success of the event reflected DUT’s commitment to fostering intellectual exchange and driving positive change within the academic community.

“As South Africa’s higher education landscape continues to evolve, such gatherings play a pivotal role in shaping the future of commerce education. By leveraging the collective expertise and experience of diverse institutions, the meeting at DUT served as a powerful platform to chart a path towards educational excellence, ensuring that graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in a rapidly changing business environment,” noted Prof Olugbara.
