Professor Nemavhola expressed a warm welcome to the World of Work Careers Fair 2023 Gala Dinner guests, proudly hosted by the Durban University of Technology.
He conveyed that the occasion was more than just a dinner; it was a celebration of synergy. “We are honoured to host not only those organisations that have long-standing relationships with our institution but also those who have recently partnered with us and we thank you greatly. Your presence tonight underscores your commitment to investing in the next generation of talent and cultivating the leaders who will shape our future,” he stressed.
Prof Nemavhola further added that from a participation of 104 entities last year, it has seen a remarkable increase to nearly 142 confirmed organisations this year. He relayed that this remarkable expansion mirrors DUT’s collective dedication to creating meaningful connections and fostering opportunities that transcend traditional boundaries.
“Each industry present offers unique perspectives, opportunities, and challenges that are ready to be embraced. This is your moment to network, to share your aspirations, and to gain insight into the industries that resonate with your dreams. To our esteemed partner organisations, your diverse presence reflects the intricate tapestry of our economy. You are the driving force behind innovation, sustainability, and growth. Your engagement at this gala dinner not only underscores your commitment to our students and graduates but also showcases the unity that can shape a brighter future for all,” he remarked.

This initiative presents a symbiotic way to harmonise the skills our students possess with the workplace opportunities that employers provide,” he said.
Additionally, that the World of Work initiative plays a pivotal role in ensuring that graduates not only contribute value to their workplaces but also acquire pertinent skills in the process.
Mgidi also showcased the SETA’s contributions in supporting DUT students over the past three years and mentioned some noteworthy achievements which included the enrolling of more than 200 students in various bursary programmes, funding of 16 students in research, innovation and PhD studies. Registering over 160 students in internship and graduate programmes. Approving funding for more than 90 students for the current financial graduate programmes.
He explained that these accomplishments underscore their dedication to empowering students and ensuring their successful integration into the workforce.
“In closing, as a SETA deeply invested in industry research and innovation to identify critical and scarce skills necessary for our sector’s sustainability, its inspiring to witness universities like ours taking skills development so seriously. From the stringent selection process for master’s and PhD students to the intensive training in graduate placements and global standard testing, we can confidently say that our sector’s future is in capable hands.”
