DUT RUGBY TO TAKE PART IN THE FNB VARSITY SHIELD TOURNAMENT ONCE AGAIN

DUT RUGBY TO TAKE PART IN THE FNB VARSITY SHIELD TOURNAMENT ONCE AGAIN

Competing for the second consecutive year, the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) rugby team, DUT Rugby will be taking part in South Africa’s second tier university rugby tournament, the FNB Varsity Shield 2022.

The tournament is set to commence on the 4th of March 2022. The DUT rugby team will play their first game of the tournament against Round 1 and 2 hosts, FNB Rhodes in Makhanda, Eastern Cape.  All games will be broadcast live on SuperSport (DStv channel 211) and will simulcast on the largest SuperSport Channel, 209.

The DUT rugby team is working around the clock to prepare for this prestigious tournament and to improve on their performance this year. In 2021, they competed for the first time in this tournament which was challenging but yet exciting to finally get the opportunity to partake in the Varsity Shield.

Since the team’s inception, the team has made tremendous progress in just five years of its establishment. They are grateful to the University Sports South Africa (USSA) for affording them yet another opportunity to compete in the Varsity Shield. Using the #DUTreadyforthefight, the team is ready to put up a fight in this tournament.

DUT Sports Officer, Ms Tumie Mgudu has urged the DUT community to rally behind DUT rugby team as they go out there to fight for the badge and image of the university.

The team is on the back foot after losing all their games in 2021 which places them on the verge of being relegated. To maintain their spot in the competition, the team would have to win a minimum of two games which places a lot of pressure on the coach and the players. The department of Sports Administration at DUT has done its best to ensure that a qualified coaching team is appointed for the task. We are confident that their expertise will carry the team to victory,” said Mgudu.

She extended her gratitude to the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Rugby Union for the support and urged KZN as a whole to support the team. Thus far, she expressed that they are happy with the preparations and are looking forward to every task ahead of them.

The team has made us proud and we will do everything we can to support them. The games being broadcasted on SuperSport will be good publicity for the university and we are proud to have contributed to that,” she said.

Furthermore, Mgudu pleaded with the team to give off their best and fight for the badge.

To get behind the DUT Rugby, show them love on the DUT team’s social media platforms.

The Department of Sports Administration at DUT would like to urge everyone to go out in numbers to like the team’s social media platforms and show them some love.
