The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Sport Administration unit aim to keep flying the South African flag high as three dynamic staff members were appointed and four players were selected to represent the South African team in the Confederation of University and Colleges Sports Associations (CUCSA).
The CUCSA games will be held in Tshwane from 8 July 2024 to 12 July 2024 under University Sport South Africa (USSA).
According to the recent USSA article published on their website, CUCSA was founded on 18 August 1990, in Lusaka, Zambia. The Confederation of University and Colleges Sports Associations (CUCSA) comprises of the National University and College Sports Associations of the Africa Zone VI countries. The following countries are members of CUCSA Zone VI: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Below are the DUT staff members and their roles in the CUCSA committee.
- DUT Sport Officer, Takalani Mfamadi, is the Chief Sport Officer for team South Africa (SA).
- DUT Sport Centre Supervisor, Lindokuhle Zwane is the manager for venues and facilities for team South Africa (SA).
- DUT Sport Centre Supervisor, Thubalethu Phaku, is the team manager for Athletics South Africa (SA).
After successfully competing in the CUCSA selection trials, the following athletes were selected in different sporting codes:
- Ntokozo Mkhize (M)-volleyball
- Mawande Dlamini (F)- volleyball
- Sinqobile Ntuli (F)- volleyball
- Zamanyambose Mthethwa (F)-chess
Yengwa: The Sport Administration Manager said that this is a great opportunity for DUT sport because it shows growth. “For the past 10 to 15 years, DUT sport has never had such a huge national representative,” he said.
He also shared that through USSA initiatives student athletes obtain a platform and resources necessary for them to develop their talent in a competitive environment and for getting exposure.
“As part of the DUT ENVISION2030 Values and Principles such as commitment and excellence, having staff members and students selected at CUCSA level shows that we have the best as a unit putting into consideration that we have limited resources, but we produce good results,” said Yengwa.
Sharing his excitement, Yengwa passed his gratitude to the Dean of Students, Registrar and Executive Management for their endless support and trusting in DUT sport.
