A young multitalented Aphiwe Mbambo, who is a Netball first school team player, Aerobics and aspiring sports presenter, has demonstrated that talent alone is never sufficient. Mbambo was the first in his family to graduate. He obtained his Diploma in Information Communications Technology (ICT) in Business Analysis at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2025 Autumn Graduation Ceremony at Indumiso campus in Pietermaritzburg, on Tuesday, 13 May 2025.
Born in Umlazi, he developed a passion for sports from a young age. Despite his family’s athletic background, he never had it easy, his upbringing was challenging.
“I take it as blessing, and I am proud of my achievement. To be a student is not an easy thing when you come from a society that is not academically motivated. I had to be brave and stay motivated. This success is not only for me, but for my family as I am the first one to graduate,’’ he added.
The 22-year-old’s sport journey started in 2022, while he was doing sports content, he met the head coach of the Midlands football ladies’ team who saw his interest in sports media. Soon after that he was given a chance to manage the football team for the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Tournament, which paved a way for him into the DUT Sports team.
Amongst his biggest dreams is to become one of the best sports presenters in the country and the best television star as he looks up to the top international sport presenters like Thomas Mlambo.
“I do see my future into sport not just as a player, but as a sports presenter which is something that I am looking forward to. It has been along dream which I hope one day to achieve,’’ he explained.
The sport fanatic is currently studying Advance Diploma in Business Administration, and he aims to pursue his master’s degree soon.
