DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates who will participate productively in the development of the region, the country and the world. Through sport, the University continues to nurture discipline, leadership, teamwork and holistic student development.

Tiyani Mboweni, a member of the DUT Communications team, recently engaged with DUT football star Sekwanele Mbekezeli Mtolo, who graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Management Sciences: Marketing at the 2026 DUT Autumn Graduation Ceremony, to share his journey  as a student-athlete, his passion for football, and how he lives the DUT Living Values through his involvement in varsity sport.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?
A: “I joined the DUT football team in 2023. It has been a great opportunity to represent the University while growing both as a player and as a student.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this sport?
A: “My passion for football started at a young age. I enjoyed playing with friends in my community, and over time my love for the game grew as I realised it teaches discipline, teamwork and perseverance.”

Q: As a goalkeeper, what does your role entail and how does it benefit the team?
A: “I play as a goalkeeper. My main responsibility is to protect the goal by making saves, organising the defence and communicating with my teammates. A goalkeeper gives the team confidence and can change the outcome of a match through crucial saves and leadership.”

Q: Which other sports do you enjoy and why?
A: “I also enjoy athletics and basketball because they promote fitness, discipline and teamwork. They help improve my overall athletic ability.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “The biggest tournament I have participated in is the SA Universities Football Tournament, where I had the opportunity to compete against some of the best university teams in South Africa.”

Q: Why is it important for DUT to invest in student sport?
A: “Sport helps students develop leadership, discipline, confidence and teamwork. It also creates opportunities for scholarships, careers and personal growth while promoting a healthy lifestyle.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: “My role model is my sister, Nontuthuko Mtolo, because of her humility, consistency and determination. She inspires me in many ways.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and principles do you identify with most, and why?
A: “I identify most with integrity, excellence, respect and accountability. These values guide me to be honest, work hard, respect others and take responsibility for my actions, both on and off the field.”

Q: Do you see a future in football?
A: “Yes. I hope to continue playing at a higher level while also contributing to the development of young footballers through coaching and mentorship in the future.”

Q: As a DUT sports star, how do you make a positive impact in your community?
A: “I aim to inspire young people to stay active, work hard and balance their education with sport. I want to show that success comes through dedication and discipline.”

Q: What impact has sport had on your life?
A: Sport has shaped my character by teaching me discipline, resilience, teamwork and time management. It has also given me lifelong friendships and valuable opportunities.

Q: What can DUT do to attract more spectators to varsity sport?
A: “DUT can increase social media promotion, organise entertainment before and during matches, involve student societies, offer competitions and giveaways, and create themed match days to make varsity sport more exciting and engaging for students and the broader University community.”
