DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is committed to producing adaptive graduates who contribute meaningfully to the development of the region, South Africa and the world. Through sport, the University continues to promote discipline, leadership, teamwork and resilience, while supporting the holistic development of students both on and off the field.

S’bonelo Dlamini, a member of the DUT Communications team, recently sat down with DUT Volleyball star Simosakhe Shezi to discuss his sporting journey, what inspired his passion for volleyball and how he embodies the DUT Living Values through his participation in university sport.

Q: When did you become part of the DUT Volleyball Club?

A: “I joined DUT volleyball in 2021, during my first year at DUT. Since then, volleyball has become an important part of my university journey.”

Q: What sparked your interest in DUT Volleyball?

A: “My passion for volleyball motivated me to join the club. I wanted to continue playing the sport I love while developing my skills and representing DUT.”

Q: What is your role in the club, and how does it benefit members?

A: “I serve as the Chairperson and Captain of DUT volleyball. My responsibilities include leading the team, supporting players, working with the committee and coaches, and helping to create a positive and united team environment. The role has strengthened my leadership, communication and teamwork skills.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I am also interested in soccer and swimming. Soccer interests me because of its teamwork and competitiveness, while swimming promotes fitness, discipline and endurance.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “One of my biggest achievements was representing the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Senior volleyball team at the National Inter- Provincial Tournament in Gauteng. It was an honour to represent my province and compete at a high level.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “Sport helps students develop discipline, leadership, teamwork, confidence and resilience. It also teaches important life skills while helping students balance academics with personal development.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “My mother is my role model because of her strength, sacrifices and determination. She has always encouraged me to work hard and never give up on my goals.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I associate with excellence, integrity, accountability and collaboration. Volleyball has taught me to respect others, take responsibility and work together towards a common goal.”

Q: Do you see a future in volleyball?

A: “Yes, I would like to continue developing as a player, compete at higher levels and contribute to the growth of volleyball by inspiring and supporting younger athletes.”

Q: What impact has volleyball made on your life?

A: “Volleyball has made me more disciplined, confident and responsible. It has developed my leadership, communication and teamwork skills and taught me how to handle pressure.”

 Q: How does it feel to graduate while reflecting on your sporting journey at DUT?

A:” It feels amazing and rewarding. Balancing my Advanced Diploma in Shipping and Logistics with volleyball was challenging, but it taught me discipline, time management and perseverance. I am proud of how far I have come both academically and in sport.”

Q: Can you suggest ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?

A: “Universities can use social media, entertainment, competitions and giveaways to create an exciting match-day experience. More promotion on campus can also encourage students to come out and support their teams.”
