DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is committed to producing adaptive graduates who contribute meaningfully to the development of the region, South Africa and the world. Through sport, the University continues to develop discipline, leadership, teamwork and resilience, while promoting the holistic development of students both on and off the field.

Sompisi Ntuli, a member of the DUT Communications team, recently sat down with DUT Volleyball star Dodo Linamana to discuss his sporting journey, what inspired his passion for volleyball and how he embodies the DUT Living Values through his participation in university sport.

Qualification: Bachelor of Applied Science in Industrial Chemistry

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “In March 2026.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “The energy in this sport is different, and I love grounding the ball on the opposing court.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “I am the outside hitter, which is position 4, it serves as the team’s primary go-to attacker and a foundational all-around player who plays across all six rotations.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “Football.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “In the Eastern Cape provincial playoffs under 19.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “It is vital because not all the students will succeed through their qualifications, some will succeed through their talent in sport. If one develops them, one can create coaches, teachers, players and role models who can then go back to their communities as leaders in developing sport.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “Pedro González López, more commonly known as Pedri . He is 23 years of age; he’s disciplined and prioritises playing the game.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I would say respect as aim to respect the rules and my team.”

Q: Do you see a future in your sport?

A: “Yes, I do.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “When I go back home to my community, I give practical advice to the community kids which they appreciate.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Sport is the only reason I stay fit and away from lifestyle diseases. Sport has thought me discipline, resilience and built my confidence. Lastly, my teammates have now become my family.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “Post player posters around the campus with QR codes for fixture.”
