DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. Mnqobi Ngobese, DUT Communication’s editorial team member, recently engaged with the DUT Chess  star  Nokwanda Buthelezi, to share her student experience through sports and academics and how she lives the DUT Living Values.

Qualification: Advanced Diploma in Information and Communication Technology.

Q:  When did you join the DUT Sport Team?

A: “I joined the DUT sport team in 2021.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “My interest in chess was sparked by one of my friends who introduced me to the game in primary school.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “⁠As the DUT chess captain, I guide and motivate my teammates to perform at their best, fostering a positive and supportive team environment.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A “I’m interested in Esport( FIFA). I enjoy sport codes that challenge players physically and mentally, requiring skill and strategy.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “ The biggest tournament I have participated in was the South African Chess Open 2024.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?

A: “Developing students in sports is vital for DUT as it fosters discipline, team work and time management skills.”

Q: Who is your sport role model and why?

A: “⁠My role model is my chess coach, Bheki Mgobhozi. This is due to his dedication, perseverance, his creative playing style and his love for the game.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Excellence, in everything that I do, even with my studies I always want to excel.”

Q: Do you see a future in chess?

A:” Yes, I see a future in chess as it continues to evolve and incorporate technology.”

Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “⁠As a DUT sport star, my role benefits my community by promoting cognitive development and I am planning to host a chess workshop for underprivileged children.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “⁠ Sports has made a significant impact on my life, teaching me valuable skills and providing a sense of belonging.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?

A: “ I suggest offering incentives, creating a lively atmosphere and promoting events through social media.”
