DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. Phiwayinkosi Sibiya, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT football player Hasan Bonomali to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Name: Hasan Bonomali

Place of birth: Estcourt

Sport code: Football

Qualification: Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management

Q:  When did you join the DUT Sport Team?

A: “I joined in August 2024.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “I grew up in a football-loving family, so the sport has always been a huge part of my life. From a young age, I was training with the big boys, honing my skills and falling in love with the game. Football is not just something I play, it is something I have always been naturally talented in and passionate about.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “I play as a winger, contributing both offensively and defensively to the team. Wingers are crucial in creating chances, supporting attacks, and tracking back to defend. However, every position is vital in a team sport like football.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I am also passionate about sprinting, a sport where I have excelled and earned numerous awards during my high school years.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I would say playing in the South African Breweries Regional League (SAB) League for two years was the biggest for me. It was a great experience, and it felt like a tournament on its own.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?

A: “Sports at DUT play a vital role in helping students manage stress, maintain a healthy balance between academics and well-being, and develop teamwork and leadership skills. It also helps us to stay disciplined and resilient, which is essential for personal and professional growth.”

Q: Who is your sport role model and why?

A: “My sports role model is Lionel Messi. He’s not only the greatest footballer of all time but also a true example of humility. Despite his unmatched talent and countless achievements, he remains grounded, dedicated, and hardworking. It is a combination that inspires me both on and off the field.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I strongly associate with respect, honesty, and accountability. Respect is key, both on and off the field. I value other people’s contributions and treat everyone with fairness. Honesty helps me build trust with teammates and coaches, ensuring clear and open communication. Accountability drives me to take responsibility for my actions, whether it is owning up to mistakes or striving to improve. These values guide me as a player and as a student.”

Q: Do you see a future in football?

A: “Yes, definitely. I aspire to become a professional football star.”

Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “I would not call myself a star, but as a hardworking individual, I strive to inspire others to believe in their dreams. My role shows that DUT is not just about quality education, it also supports student-athletes with an excellent sports lifestyle, proving that success can be achieved both on and off the field and this encourages more people to apply at our university from my community.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Sport has had a profoundly positive impact on my life. It has kept me grounded, steering me away from negative influences and harmful habits. It has been a healthy outlet for stress, helping me stay fit and maintain a clear, focused mind. Beyond physical benefits, sport has taught me discipline, teamwork, and resilience. These are qualities that shape how I approach challenges in every aspect of life.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?

A: “Use social media to build hype and highlight how attending helps students de-stress from academics. Organise meet-and-greets with players, integrate wellness tips, and introduce loyalty rewards for attending multiple games. Collaborate with campus groups to expand reach and remind students that their support motivates athletes and contributes to team success, creating a fun, community-building experience for all.”
