As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. Mnqobi Ngobese, DUT Communications’ editorial team member, recently engaged with the DUT netball star Silungile Ncanana , to share her student experience through sports and academics and how she lives the DUT Living Values.

Qualification: BHSc in Emergency Medical Care and Rescue.
Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?
A: “I had joined the DUT netball team in 2021.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “I had always enjoyed participating in sports from the time I was a young girl. I became interested in netball as it was the only female sport played in my primary school, I had joined and fell in love with it.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “I play the centre position which is more like the engine of the team. The centre position becomes a link between the attackers and the defenders. A centre must also control the game, communicate with teammates, and coordinate the team’s movements.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A : “My passion lies only in the sport of netball.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “The biggest tournament I have participated in is the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Netball Championship.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?
A: “Sports plays a significant role in one’s academic performance. Through the improvement of focus and concentration, students are able to enhance their academic performance significantly. Sports also provides support in stress management as well as anxiety and depression. It gives a chance to develop communication skills where one can talk and learn from teammates from different cultures or backgrounds. Moreover, such activity can improve one’s general health and also mental well-being.”
Q: Who is your sport role model and why?
A: “I see everyone who forms part of my life as role models.”

A: “I associate with respect, integrity, fairness, professionalism, commitment and excellence.”

A: Yes, I do see a future in this sport.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “To me, sports has been a saving grace in school because it had relieved my academic stress. Also, I enjoy getting a chance to socialise and connect with people.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?
A: “One idea is to create memorable experiences for spectators by offering early-bird promotions and giveaways, provide comfortable seating, and entertainment before and after the game, as well as using social media to reach out to fans.”
