DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT Rugby star, Xoliswa Maluka to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I joined the DUT Rugby team in 2023.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “It was influenced by my coaches when I was in primary school.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “During line outs, I am responsible for throwing the ball. I also assist by hooking the ball during scrums.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “Tennis and hockey. Those are other sports I played in high school.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “It was St. Stithians Rugby Challenge.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “To showcase the students’ talents because not everyone is as equally gifted when it comes to books.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira, I believe he was the best rugby player.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Integrity, to me it means one must have the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles that you always abide to.”

Q: Do you see a future in Rugby?

A: “Yes, I aspire to become a professional rugby player in the future.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “By encouraging the younger generation and instilling the mindset that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “It helped me by being in control of my mind, keeping calm, making healthy decisions and it also serves as a smooth opportunity to take a break from studying.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “Offer training groups for people that are interested in a specific sport. That way they will be taught the fundamentals of the game.”
