Sport code: Football
Position: Goalkeeper
Qualification: Diploma in Management Sciences: Marketing
Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?
A: “I joined the DUT Football Club in 2023.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “Growing up, football was more than just a game to me, it was a way to escape the negative environment around me and stay focused. Watching local tournaments and playing with friends in the community sparked my love for the sport. The passion, energy, and unity were the things that contributed to my love for soccer.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “I am a goalkeeper, which is a position that requires discipline, sharp reflexes, confidence and leadership. I’m the last line of defence and often the first to start an attack. A goalkeeper organises the backline and keeps the team calm under pressure. It’s a demanding position that teaches responsibility and composure, both on and off the field.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A: “I’m also interested in volleyball and athletics. Volleyball sharpens my coordination, and athletics helps with fitness and agility, which are both useful for my role in soccer. I believe exploring other sports also keeps me mentally fresh and physically balanced.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “It was the 2024 Varsity Football, where DUT Football Club participated for the first time and the University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament. The DUT FC has qualified for the 2025 Varsity Football once again this year and I am hoping to make it to the team that will be competing in the upcoming tournament in August 2025.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?
A: “Sports teaches one discipline, teamwork, leadership, and time management which are all essential life skills. By investing in sports, DUT is not only building athletes but also future leaders and role models. It gives students a platform to express themselves, stay motivated and strive for excellence.”
Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: “The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Sipho Chaine is my role model. He has shown that with perseverance and hard work one can achieve anything in life. His journey inspires me daily. He came from humble beginnings and showed that it’s possible to rise with consistency and belief in your craft. His story gives me hope that my dreams are valid too.”
Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?
A: “For me, it’s transparency. Being open and honest, especially as a goalkeeper and leader, is crucial. It builds trust within the team and creates a culture of accountability and growth.”
Q: Do you see a future in football?
A: “Yes, football has potential. It’s fast-paced, exciting, and growing in popularity. I believe with the right support and promotion at varsity level, it can develop greatly. More young athletes are getting involved, and the energy around it is growing.”
Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “I aim to be a positive example to the youth back home. I come from a place where drugs and violence are high. Being a student athlete shows others that there’s a better path. I motivate others to stay in school, chase their dreams and believe in themselves.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “Sport saved me from the streets and it gave me purpose. It taught me values like discipline, focus, and resilience. It helped me find direction in a place where it is easy to lose your way. I honestly owe a lot of who I am today because of football.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?
A: “Use social media to promote games and athlete stories. Engage schools and communities by offering free or discounted entry. Collaborate with influencers or former players to hype the events. Host mini-events or challenges during halftime to keep the crowd involved.”
