DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT Football star, Mr Thembinkosi Mchunu to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I joined the DUT football team in 2024 during my first year of study.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “I’ve been playing football since I was a kid and my family encouraged me to pursue my passion. I love the teamwork, strategy and physical challenge that comes with the sport.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “I play as a midfielder where I’m responsible for supporting both the defense and offense. My role involves maintaining possession, creating scoring opportunities, and tracking back to help the defense. It benefits the team by providing energy, vision, and control on the field.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I’m also interested in athletics, particularly track events. I enjoy the individual challenge and the opportunity to push myself to new limits.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “One of the biggest tournaments I’ve participated in is the Varsity Football Tournament, where DUT represented the province of KwaZulu-Natal.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “It’s essential for DUT to develop students in sport because it fosters a sense of community, promotes physical and mental well-being. Essentially it also provides opportunities for students to develop valuable life skills like teamwork, discipline and leadership.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “My role model is Thapelo Morena, a South African footballer who inspired me with his dedication, work ethic and passion for the sport.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I associate with the values of respect and integrity. As a student-athlete I believe it’s essential to respect my teammates, opponents, and coaches while also demonstrating integrity in my actions on and off the field.”

Q: Do you see a future in professional football?

A: “Yes, I would love to pursue a career in professional football. I’m working hard to develop my skills, gain experience and potentially get scouted by professional teams.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “By promoting a healthy lifestyle among community members, especially the youth, encouraging them to encourage in physical activities and sports.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “It has given me personal growth and has helped me to develop discipline and dedication.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “Offer live music performances, DJ sessions or other forms of entertainment to build excitement and energy.”
