DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT Chess star, Siyathaba Mbatha to share her student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I joined in 2024.”

Q:  What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “Growing up, I saw my friends playing chess, and I was drawn to the game at that time which was all about going places, however right now chess to me is beyond that.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “As a player in the ladies section of the DUT Chess team, my role involves competing against other universities’ top female players. This entails analysing positions, anticipating opponents’ moves, and making strategic decisions during matches. By performing well in the ladies section, I contribute to the team’s overall score and help DUT achieve a strong standing in the competition. My participation also inspires and promotes women’s involvement in chess, both within DUT and the broader community.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I’m also interested in E-sports because of the strategic thinking and quick reflexes required.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I have participated in the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Chess Championship.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “Developing students in sport is vital because it promotes holistic growth, fostering mental wellness, discipline and teamwork skills.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “My role model is Nemo Zhou who is the Woman grandmaster due to her exceptional skills, strategic thinking and dedication to the game.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I associate with excellence and respect, striving for high-quality performance and treating opponents with dignity and respect.”

Q: Do you see a future in chess?

A: “Yes, I see a future in chess, and I am aiming to compete at higher levels and potentially become a grandmaster.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “My role benefits the community by inspiring young chess players and promoting the value of strategic thinking and problem-solving.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Sport has taught me discipline, focus, and analytical thinking, essential skills that benefit me beyond chess.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “My ideas include hosting chess tournaments with live streaming, offering interactive chess puzzles, and promoting social media coverage to engage with fans.”
