DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT Football star, Sifundo Ngema to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Qualification: Advanced Diploma in Public Relations and Communication Management

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I joined the DUT Football Club in 2021.”

Q:  What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “Football was the only dominant sport in my neighbourhood, that is how I fell in love with the game.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “I play as a defender to prevent opponents goals from going in and scoring against my team.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I can play volleyball as well.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “It was Varsity Football and University Sport South Africa (USSA) tournament.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “To help students grow in sport and shift their focus from alcohol and drug abuse.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “Grant Kekana, because he plays the centre back position.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Respect and accountability. My life is centred around respect and I also believe we are accountable for what we do as individuals.”

Q: Do you see a future in football?

A: “Anything is possible.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “I come from a very small town, there’s a lot of young boys who wish to be where I am so that alone is an inspiration.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Sport has shaped me to a responsible young man.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “Tickets for the games should be handed out earlier in that way we would have many spectators.”
