DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT sport star, Sibongakonke Khumalo to share her student experience through sports and academics and how she lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I joined on 20 March 2025.”

Q:  What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “For me it was discipline and keeping focus.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “My position entails learning and focusing on learning new techniques, improving my skills and applying feedback from instructors.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “Volleyball, it is a team sport that promotes communication, teamwork and physical fitness.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “In the USSA.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “It is vital for DUT to develop students for more student engagement and retention in sport.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “My role model is Gugulethu Mngomezulu because she is open-minded and strong.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Commitment is key and being dedicated is essential for progressing in such a sport.”

Q: Do you see a future in your sport?

A: “Yes, I do see a future in this sport.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “The aim is to promote holistic development which I do through this sport.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Sport has given me personal growth.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “Being interactive in activities such as fan zones or question and answer sessions with athletes is some ideas that can attract spectators to varsity sports.”
