As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT Boxing star, Eric Zwane to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?
A: “I joined DUT Boxing early this year in 2025.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “For an amateur boxer, it is an advantage to train with professional boxers. It also help you gain confidence and more experience.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “Boxing is an individual sport. I am committed to the sport and I always aim to fly the DUT Boxing flag high.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A: “I have played football before but I gained interest in boxing.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “As an amateur boxer, it was the 2023 SA Youth and Elite Championship. As a professional boxer, it was Intululwane Boxing Tournament.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?
A: “By supporting sports development, DUT can help students become well-rounded individuals with valuable skills and experiences.”
Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: “My favourite boxer, Lindelani Sibisi. I like his style of boxing.”
Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?
A: “I associate with honesty and excellence because it builds trust, supports integrity, inspires innovation and most importantly, it drives quality.”
Q: Do you see a future in Boxing?
A: “I do see future in boxing but for me it will be short since I’m shortsighted and obviously one day I will not pass the eye test. However, I will make my boxing career short and sweet.”
Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “I think my role will benefit my community by opening doors for other young boxers.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “It taught me discipline and that I should never underestimate someone in life. It made me a role model for other aspiring boxers.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?
A: “They can use social media and associate with local businesses for mutually beneficial partnerships.”
