DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT Karate star Andiswa Khuzwayo, to share her student experience through sports and academics and how she lives the DUT Living Values.

Qualification:  Diploma: Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in Business Analysis.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I joined on 18 April 2023.”

Q:  What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “Physical and mental fitness and I wanted to be able to defend myself (self-defence).”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “My role is being the barrier between students and officials, which helps improve my leadership, talking skills and also teaches me to stand up for what is right . That way the team gets what is rightfully theirs.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I am interested in dance. I love the techniques and choreography as it is very intriguing.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I have participated in the USSA tournament.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “To help to avoid mischievous actions, if students are occupied they will behave.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “Vukani Sobhoyise, he has momentum and drive, even in difficult situations he rises strong.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Compassion, being a karate sports woman means that you have to keep your emotions in check which is hard at times.”

Q: Do you see a future in karate?

A: “Yes, I do see a future in karate for myself.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “Being united is what benefits the community as there is no discretion as everyone is welcome to train with us.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “It has allowed me personal growth and a great mental fitness regime.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “Having pop up at events to help to build brand awareness of varsity sports.”
