DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT Rugby star Ahlume Bentswana, to share her student experience through sports and academics and how he/she lives the DUT Living Values.

Qualification: Diploma in Nautical Studies

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I joined the team in 2023.”

Q:  What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “The physicality is what I enjoyed the most. However, it all started off with me getting out of my comfort zone as a former football player.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “I play the position of flank which is usually number six or seven. As a flanker you provide support in the scrum and also in the lineouts. You help to win possession and to create attacking opportunities.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I have always been interested in swimming because of my love for water from a young age.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I had participated in the U20 Women’s week in 2024 and this year. It shows great dedication and skill being chosen to represent your province at a national level.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “To create opportunities for students to showcase their talents at different levels.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “Makazole Mapimpi rose from the grassroots to the big stages and he has left a mark of resilience and respect on me.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Commitment as it leads to achieving goals and greatness whether it be in your studies or sports, and also excellence as it pushes individuals to their full potential and to make a positive impact.”

Q: Do you see a future in rugby?

A: “I do see a future in rugby as I am young and there’s room for improvement.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “My community benefits in a way that a star rises right in front of them inspiring the younger generations.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “It has built a lot of discipline in my life and understanding the true value of commitment in everything I embark on.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A:“More media coverage should be planned for the games and to also provide spectators with transportation.”
