As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT Boxing star Simiso Hlatshwayo, to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?
A: “I had first joined the team in my first year in 2023 but I had stopped training due to personal issues but I have rejoined this year, 2025.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “From a young age I have always had an interest in boxing, and it became my most favourite sport.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “Boxing is a solo sports so they is no specific position, you are simply representing the DUT team and the institution is also helping you to reach to the top.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A: “I’m interested in volleyball which I thoroughly enjoy.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “The biggest tournament I have participated in is the Elite Championship tournament where DUT clinched third position and where I won a gold medal.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?
A: “I believe sports is a way to teach students to be disciplined as much with health benefits, also paving the way for successful graduates.”
Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: “My father because he shows me what kind of a man to be and not be. I also admire Floyd Mayweather for his work ethics and discipline in the sport.”
Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?
A: “I associate with respect and commitment because they work hand in hand.”
Q: Do you see a future in boxing?
A: “Yes, I do see a future in this sport and I aim to make it happen.”
Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “My role as a sports star is beneficial because I aim to be the reason people would like to go to university to study and play sports.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “Sports had made a huge impact on me, not only has it saved me from the bad things out there, but it had taught me not to give up, I have gained confidence in myself.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?
A: “Capturing training drills of the various sports can be a great way to showcase what students prefer spending their time on.”
