DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aims to produce adaptive graduates who contribute meaningfully to the development of the region, country, and world. DUT Communications team member S’bonelo Dlamini recently spoke to DUT Karate star Mhlonishwa Ngwazi about his student journey, balancing sports and academics, and living out the DUT Living Values.

Sport code: Karate

Qualification: Bachelor of Built Environment (BE) in Architecture

Q: When did you join the DUT sports team?

A: “I joined the DUT karate team this year, 2025.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “I am a person who likes to be in my own space. Karate is a sport where only two people compete, which sparked my keen interest”

Q: In terms of the position you play, please explain what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “Although there are no positions in karate, only divisions, I’m currently in the under 70 kg division. I ensure I perform well to inspire my teammates to perform at their best.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I’m also interested in rugby because it’s unique, fun physical sport.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I have been part of the SALGA games for three years. This year, I was part of the university team to represent at the USSA competition.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “Sports are essential for developing a student’s physical and mental health. Physical fitness helps build strength, and enhance one’s confidence.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “My role models are rugby star, Cheslin Kolbe and Kyokushin karateka and kickboxer, Lechi Kurbanov. I admire their approach to their sporting codes.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I associate with integrity and excellence. I aim to lead by example while performing to the best of my ability, inspiring others to do the same.”

Q: Do you see a future in your sport?

A: “Yes, I have always dreamed of being a sportsperson and participating in sport for the rest of my life.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “I mentor kids in my community, and many kids aspire to be like me, which is humbling.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Sport has taught me respect and discipline, helping me to make friends and to form a network of like-minded individuals. It has shaped me into the person that I am today.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “Hosting more sporting tournaments with celebrity guests will attract spectators. Social media promotions will also help, as most people are active online.”
