DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates who will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, a member of DUT’s  Communications team member, recently engaged with the DUT female soccer star, Xolisile Mnikathi, to share her student experience through sports, academics and how she lives the DUT Living Values.

Qualification: Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management

 

Q: When did you join the DUT Female Football team?

A: “I joined in 2022, so I have been a member for the past three years.”

Q: What sparked your interest in football?

A: “It started casually. I would get bored after my classes until one day, I saw the ladies team training and that is when I decided to join them.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “As a defensive midfield player, my role is to provide balance and stability between defense and attack. I am responsible for protecting the back line by breaking up opposition plays through interceptions, tackles and smart positioning. I stay aware of passing lanes, apply pressure to opponents in central areas and assist regain possession quickly.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “Netball, because I like how the game is played.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “ It was the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Championship.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “I believe that sport promotes physical health and mental well-being. It helps students build discipline, teamwork, leadership and time management skills. It enhances DUT’s identity, unity, pride through competition and representation. Sport also creates opportunities for personal growth, careers and community engagement.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “I do not have a single role model, but I am motivated by my own goals and desire to improve. I learn from the experiences of different players, coaches and people around me. Their dedication, and hard work inspire me to stay disciplined and committed. I believe that self-motivation and continuous learning drives my growth further.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I associate with integrity and accountability. Integrity guides me to always do what is right, even when no one is watching. Accountability ensures that I take responsibility for my actions, and remain committed to my duties and the people I serve.”

Q: Do you see a future in your sport?

A: “Although I may not pursue sport as a long-term career, it plays an important role in my personal development. Sport helps me stay disciplined, healthy, and focused, while teaching me valuable skills such as teamwork, time management and resilience. These qualities benefited me in my academic journey and will do so in my future career beyond sport.”

Q: As a DUT female football star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “I serve as a positive role model who inspires the community to value education and growth. I engage in community outreach initiatives that support social upliftment and awareness.  I help connect the community with DUT by sharing opportunities and promoting positive change.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Sport has had a positive impact on my life by improving my discipline and time management. It has helped me stay physically fit and mentally focused. Through sport, I have learned teamwork, resilience, and handling pressure. These lessons have shaped my character both on and off the field.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “By giving prizes to students who come to the matches on time.”
